A 12-Minute Meditation to Celebrate Our Connection with Ourselves and Each Other

A guided meditation aims to foster healing amid political divisions, racial conflicts, and social disconnect.

This meditation for racial healing highlights the concept of interconnection, emphasizing that to truly honor our bonds with others, we first must honor ourselves. By acknowledging our shared humanity, we can pave the way for healing political polarization, racial conflicts, and various kinds of disconnections that affect our lives.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. profoundly stated, “I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be.” This quote encapsulates the essence of our interconnected realities. It invites us to reflect on the depth of our reliance on one another.

Many individuals advocate for kindness as a solution to fostering a more equitable and inclusive society. While kindness and awareness are undeniably important, they may not suffice alone. The path toward deeper healing requires significant inner work.

The journey toward racial healing begins with self-transformation, which is fundamental for becoming a person who fosters cultural inclusivity and connection. During this meditation, we take the initial steps toward embracing and nurturing our interconnectedness.

A Guided Meditation for Interconnection

1. Begin by sitting comfortably, maintaining a posture of reverence. Lengthen your spine if that feels right. There’s no need to strain; instead, sit with the groundedness of a mountain—present yet relaxed. You may choose to gaze downward or gently close your eyes.

2. Now, signal to your body and mind that you are settling into this moment. This is an opportunity to explore deeper aspects of yourself with curiosity, free from judgment, and with deep self-compassion. Take three deep breaths at your own pace. Allow your breathing to flow naturally afterward, discovering a rhythm that feels supportive. Let’s take a minute of silence together, centered on our breath.

3. Imagine a world where every being is rooted in love. In such a world, no one would cause harm to another. Recognize that this vision starts with each of us. It requires our willingness to connect and to recognize the inherent value in ourselves and others. Spend a moment contemplating how it would feel to live in a reality where everyone shared a profound connection. Let’s cultivate this vision, beginning within ourselves. Anchor your thoughts in your breath as we envision this interconnected world.

4. Next, I invite you to visualize someone who is racially different from you. Although race is a social construct, it’s one we are actively healing from. Picture someone who embodies this difference, regardless of your prior relationship with them—whether you feel a connection or not.

5. As you hold this image in your mind, repeat these affirmations silently or aloud, based on the inspiration of fellow meditator Melanie Cerdan. We’ll allow pauses between each affirmation to let these sentiments resonate within you. Breathe into this connection with the person you are visualizing as we express: “I am open to connect with you. I appreciate your openness to connect with me. May the love in me connect with the love in you. I honor your presence as I am present. I recognize your light as I acknowledge my own. I value my uniqueness and honor the unique being you are. I am grateful, and I recognize your gratitude.”

6. Express gratitude to this person for the connection you’ve shared. Take a moment to observe your feelings and bodily sensations. What emotions arise? How does this connection manifest physically within you? Simply allow yourself to be present with whatever comes up—without labeling any feelings as right or wrong.

7. As we conclude, let’s reflect on a powerful quote by Dr. Harriet Lerner: “Only through our connectedness to others can we really know and enhance the self. And only through working on the self can we begin to enhance our connectedness to others.” May we wish happiness and connection for everyone, sending out these thoughts into the world while recognizing their return to us.

8. Gradually bring your awareness back to your physical body and your immediate surroundings. Embrace the consciousness of our interconnections, allowing this awareness to guide your interactions with others and all living beings. Thank you for engaging in this practice with me today.
