A 43-Year-Old American Expat Shares Their Top Tip for Moving Abroad

Nicole Brewer’s financial situation may not appear enviable at first glance. The 43-year-old, hailing from Detroit, earns approximately $40,000 annually as an English instructor at a university in Nizwa, Oman—an ancient city rich in history. When including her supplementary income as a freelance writer and travel agent, her total expected earnings for 2024 reach around $44,000.

However, a closer look at her lifestyle could prompt admiration. Brewer pays just $650 monthly for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment that is conveniently located just a short five-minute walk from her workplace. Her rent includes utilities.

Like her university students, Brewer enjoys winter and summer breaks. With her relatively low living expenses, she often spends her time off traveling to stunning destinations such as Namibia, Seychelles, and most recently, Bali.

Since 2009, Brewer has embraced life abroad, a decision fueled by the scarcity of job opportunities during the global financial crisis back in the United States. She encourages others contemplating a similar journey: “Follow your heart, pursue your passion, and make sure to do thorough research.”

Cast Aside Doubts

Choosing to move overseas can be a daunting prospect, and Brewer candidly acknowledges the hurdles that come with being an expatriate.

“It’s certainly not without its challenges. Being on the other side of the world from family can be particularly tough during emergencies or personal situations,” she shares. “You have to embrace both the highs and the lows.”

Experiencing culture shock was inevitable for her, especially as a non-Muslim and non-Arabic speaker in a Middle Eastern nation. Nonetheless, she remained committed to her vision of an ideal life.

“For anyone considering this expat journey, I would strongly advise them not to let fear or negative external opinions sway them,” Brewer emphasizes. “If I had listened to those who warned me about moving to the Middle East—many proclaiming it to be dangerous—I wouldn’t be living my best life in Oman, recognized as one of the safest nations globally.”

Prioritize Research

Brewer was aware that those around her might not grasp the safety and fulfillment she found in Oman, as they hadn’t undertaken the same level of research.

Before her arrival in Oman, Brewer spent three years in South Korea—the first step in her international journey post-America. Leading up to her move, she conducted extensive research on ESL teaching programs that not only compensated her but also provided essential support in acclimating to her new life.

She effectively leveraged social media to connect with others already living the lifestyle she aspired to have.

“On platforms like Facebook, there are groups such as ‘Brothers and Sisters of South Korea’ and various forums for expats considering relocating,” she explains. “I extensively used social media to reach out, ask questions, and gather insights about teaching English abroad.”

According to Brewer, those who are already living the expat life can be invaluable resources for aspiring expatriates.

“Don’t hesitate to connect with individuals like myself and other expats in unique locations. We are out there and readily available on social media and various online forums,” she says. “We’re here to help answer your questions.”

For Brewer, assisting others in realizing their international aspirations feels like a crucial part of her role as a content and satisfied expat.

“I want to give back, as others did for me. I’m more than willing to offer support to those looking to explore opportunities abroad,” she concludes.
