Upcoming Season of Call the Midwife Explores New Challenges in 1970s Poplar
The eagerly anticipated Season 14 of Call the Midwife is set to debut on Sunday, March 30, introducing viewers to a transformed Poplar as the narrative transitions into the 1970s.
This season delves into a wide array of pressing issues, including labor strikes, bureaucratic hurdles in healthcare, spina bifida, reliance on iron lungs, and the complexities surrounding teenage pregnancies. The premiere episode intriguingly presents a tale of an alleged immaculate conception, which ultimately reveals itself to be a story about a young woman’s desperate search for support amidst familial rejection, as noted by Jenny Agutter, one of the show’s stars.
“They try to get the girl to denounce the devil,” Agutter remarked. “It’s unsettling territory.”
This season also sees Nonnatus House facing competition from the local Board of Health. This new entity aims to enforce control over the midwives’ services, seeking to regulate and bureaucratize the grassroots aid provided by the midwives, particularly because they oppose religious organizations from offering medical assistance. Sister Julienne, portrayed by Agutter, along with her esteemed colleague Trixie, played by Helen George, will dedicate significant efforts towards countering this bureaucratic threat.
In keeping with the series’ tradition, viewers can expect numerous births this season. However, the narrative is anticipated to tackle social conflicts more deeply than ever before, spotlighting themes of poverty and the various societal issues that stem from it, including potential abuse and related hardships, as Agutter explains.
