The Frick Collection Revitalizes Space with New Exhibitions and Cafés

The Frick Collection has undergone significant changes, particularly on its second floor, which has transformed from a private space once accessible only to the Frick family into vibrant galleries open to the public. This renovation invites visitors to explore new exhibits and enjoy a more intimate experience within the historic building.

Previously restricted by plush velvet ropes, the former private quarters of the Frick family are now part of the museum’s expanded gallery space, which has increased by approximately 30%. Among these newly accessible areas is the Boucher Room, located in what used to be Mrs. Adelaide Childs Frick’s boudoir, featuring smaller works. The space now also displays larger pieces, including Ingres’s renowned Louise, Princesse de Broglie, Later the Comtesse d’Haussonville, showcased in the Walnut Room—originally Henry Clay Frick’s bedroom. These rooms, adorned with cozy carpeting and offering serene views of the Fifth Avenue Garden, add a tranquil atmosphere to the museum experience.

The second floor further enhances visitor experience with the addition of a brand-new gift shop and the Frick’s inaugural permanent public café, strategically positioned above the reception hall and accessed via the stunning Breccia Aurora marble staircase.

Upcoming and Current Exhibitions

Although the Ronald S. Lauder Exhibition Galleries are set to open in June, there are already several exhibitions for visitors to enjoy:

“Porcelain Garden: Vladimir Kanevsky at The Frick Collection”
Running from April 17 through October 6, 2025, this exhibition features a collection of porcelain flowers and plants by Ukrainian artist Vladimir Kanevsky, inspired by the floral arrangements that adorned the Frick at its public opening in 1935. These intricate works will be displayed throughout the museum’s galleries.

“Highlights of Drawings”
From April 17 to August 11, 2025, visitors can explore a curated selection of works on paper from the likes of Degas, Goya, Ingres, Rubens, and Whistler, all made between the 15th and 19th centuries. This exhibit will be housed in the newly designated Cabinet Gallery, located where the Boucher Room was previously situated on the first floor.

“Vermeer’s Love Letters”
This exhibition, featuring the iconic piece Mistress and Maid by Johannes Vermeer, will run from June 18 to September 8, 2025. This oil on canvas painting, crafted around 1664-67, is part of The Frick Collection and showcases Vermeer’s intricate attention to detail and narrative depth.
