A Ferry Ride Away: Discover This Secluded Bahamas Hotel Featuring a Private Sandy Beach and Limited Rooms

When envisioning the Bahamas, many people picture the bustling mega-resorts of Nassau. However, a hidden gem awaits in Hope Town, a tranquil destination with a population under 500 year-round residents. This makes it an ideal location for The Island Retreat, a charming boutique hotel situated on Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands.

Positioned amid natural beauty along the shoreline, the most prevalent sound at The Island Retreat is the crow of a rooster heralding the morning. This peaceful atmosphere served as my initial indication of why the resort bears its name.

Descending the deck’s stairs and gazing at the untouched beach below made me feel as though I had stumbled upon a private island. The exclusivity of the resort is a draw for groups of friends and families celebrating significant events such as weddings, milestone birthdays, and reunions, often enjoying the place to themselves.

With a focus on personalized experiences, owner Sheri Falk greeted guests with warmth. She and her late husband, Buzz, purchased the property nearly ten years ago after falling in love with it during several visits to Hope Town and the surrounding Abaco Islands. Our conversations quickly felt like those of old friends.

Falk’s staff mirrored her welcoming nature. Chris, a staff member, ensured our needs were met, offering his contact number for any assistance we might require. His jovial demeanor made our experience even more enjoyable; whether he was providing recommendations on local attractions, delivering another bottle of Champagne, or navigating us around on a golf cart, his presence was missed once we departed. The personal connections formed added to what made The Island Retreat a remarkable destination.

Arriving at my beautifully appointed two-bedroom cottage to find a bottle of Champagne and a charcuterie board waiting was a delightful surprise—just the remedy needed after the fatigue of travel. Later, an on-site cook prepared a sumptuous dinner featuring local delicacies such as conch fritters, rice and peas, macaroni pie, along with fresh fish and chicken, ensuring a restful night in my luxurious bed.

The ambiance here invites one to pause, whether lounging on the patio with a book, absorbing the rhythmic sound of the waves, or swimming in the pool. I particularly enjoyed a private morning yoga session on the deck, with views of the ocean and a gentle breeze that nearly lulled me into sleep during meditation.

For those seeking adventure, The Island Retreat may not fit the bill. Instead, it offers a space dedicated to reflection, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Continue reading for an in-depth look at this island sanctuary.

The Island Retreat

If you’re not staying overnight, you can still access the property through a Day Pass or Summer Pass, which provides full entry to the pool, gym, restaurant, bar, beach chairs, and umbrellas. The cottage features a fully equipped kitchen and spacious living areas, both indoor and outdoor, complete with a large deck, seating, and a barbecue grill. The picturesque pool area is lined with loungers that face the ocean.

The Rooms

With a selection that includes four rooms, one suite, two villas, and one cottage, The Island Retreat offers a variety of options to suit different preferences.

The Fireplace Room in the Main House provides a cozy setting with a queen-size Murphy bed, offering glimpses of sunrise along the ocean horizon from its en suite bathroom. The Master Suite boasts ample space, a private balcony, and breathtaking ocean views.

For a truly indulgent experience, opt for the cottage, designed with care. It features ample windows, wood-beamed ceilings, beach-inspired decor, and every kitchen appliance needed, including a washer and dryer. Falk’s fashion design background is evident, emphasizing a comfortable yet modern environment for guests to enjoy.

Food and Drink

Falk and her husband’s Texan roots shine through in the culinary offerings, blending authentic Tex-Mex flavors. The Cantina Restaurant & Bar serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner poolside, where stunning ocean views enhance the dining experience, particularly at sunset. Tacos are the specialty, featuring options like achiote-marinated grilled chicken paired with chipotle crema, flank steak, and blackened shrimp. Their fresh-catch fish tacos showcase local seafood.

The drink menu prominently features tequila, with hand-crafted margaritas being a favorite among guests. Falk sources small-batch tequilas from her annual trips to Mexico.

Activities and Experiences

The resort offers a 25-foot pool that is the centerpiece of leisure activities. Even for those who prefer not to swim, the pool area provides some of the best vantage points on the property, with loungers facing the ocean and cocktails in hand.

For guests wanting to maintain their fitness routines, the gym is equipped with free weights, a Peloton bike, and offers yoga classes, with beach walks or runs serving as perfect alternatives.

The Living Room in the Main House acts as a communal space for guests to enjoy coffee, board games, and viewing options like Netflix or sports.

The Spa

The Island Retreat includes a Wellness Center, reflecting Falk’s expertise as a certified Pilates instructor and her late husband’s background as a licensed massage therapist. Guests can indulge in either Swedish or deep tissue massages for relaxation.

Accessibility and Sustainability

The accommodations are ADA compliant, ensuring accessibility for all guests.
