Retirement Abroad: Albert Greenwood’s Move to Nepal

In 2023, Albert Greenwood and his wife made the decision to relocate to Nepal, seeking a more affordable and fulfilling retirement. Greenwood has expressed concerns about the escalating costs of retirement in the United States and desired to be closer to his wife’s family.

Nepal presented an appealing option for them, boasting lower living expenses, access to quality healthcare, and a friendly community atmosphere. At 56 years old, Greenwood had earned a substantial income throughout his career but felt anxious about potential financial strains during retirement in the U.S.

Like many Americans, he sought a more affordable lifestyle abroad, ultimately choosing Nepal despite its relative lack of expatriate communities compared to other destinations.

With his wife having roots in Kathmandu, the couple aimed to be nearer to her family, allowing them to stretch their retirement funds further. Since moving, Greenwood has remarked that life has become significantly less stressful and more rewarding, although he acknowledges that his adjustment might have been easier due to his pre-existing connections in Nepal.

Living Affordably in Nepal

Greenwood articulated that their quality of life in Nepal is markedly higher than what his finances would allow in the U.S. He recognizes, however, that relocation can be challenging, particularly for those with close family ties in America.

Reflecting on his upbringing in Philadelphia and his professional journey, Greenwood completed his MBA and embarked on a career in brand management, eventually taking up the role of head of sales for an Asian food manufacturer in New York City. His retirement at 55 came after a period of prudent financial planning, enabling him to retire with a measure of comfort.

With retirement on the horizon, he faced rising healthcare costs and the burdens of city living, which contributed to their final decision to move. The couple had long envisioned relocating to Nepal and meticulously planned their transition before making the leap in May 2023.

While settling in Nepal, they secured a four-bedroom house in a desirable district for about $1,150 a month. They found the property market quite favorable, with food costs averaging half of their previous expenses in the U.S. and medical expenses significantly lower.

Greenwood’s monthly income from investments allows for a comfortable lifestyle. Alongside this financial stability, he and his wife are embracing the culture by engaging in travel and community activities.

Embracing a New Lifestyle

Greenwood views raising children in Kathmandu as more secure and economically viable than in the United States. He appreciates the supportive healthcare structure, cultural vibrancy, and community spirit that surrounds them.

Despite the challenges posed by natural disasters, he feels safe in Kathmandu, where the infrastructure has proven durable. The warmer climate also contributes to his positive experience.

Greenwood has found the local population to be generally welcoming, fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates varying cultural and religious backgrounds. He has noted a significant number of festivals in the city, which help foster community spirit.

As he settles into his new life, Greenwood is learning Nepali to enhance his interactions with locals, yet he reports that English is widely spoken. He acknowledges the education system’s emphasis on learning but recognizes the challenge facing young people in terms of employment opportunities.

The couple plans to continue their life in Nepal, buoyed by the supportive network of family and friends, ensuring that their transition is met with community support and rich cultural experiences.

This journey reflects a broader trend among American retirees exploring international options as they navigate the complexities of planning for retirement in an increasingly expensive economic landscape.
