The Transformation of Il Tabacchificio: From Tobacco Factory to Luxurious Retreat

As the spring sun warms the Puglian landscape, the air is infused with the fragrance of the Adriatic Sea. Among the picturesque olive trees and Mediterranean pines lies Il Tabacchificio, a building characterized by its simple square architecture and rich historical significance. Originally erected in the 1930s, this structure was once a bustling tobacco factory, employing around a hundred workers, predominantly women. During its peak, the Lecce province was a significant contributor to Italy’s tobacco production, and this factory played a crucial role in that economy.

The post-World War II era saw a shift in the factory’s purpose, as part of the building was repurposed for food storage until transitioning to a metal and frame production facility in the 1960s. However, after years of disuse and decline, new owners acquired the site in 2014 and embarked on a significant renovation that took four years to complete, aiming to restore its historic character while introducing modern amenities.

The renovation project was led by Raffaele Centonze, an architect renowned for his ability to “tell stories through spaces.” His vision brought forth a striking blend of the building’s historical features with contemporary design elements, turning it into a sought-after destination for travelers, both local and international.

The dining space within the renovated Tabacchificio exemplifies this design philosophy. It features a dining table from Marina Home Interiors, surrounded by Tulip chairs designed by Eero Saarinen (Knoll) and Panton chairs from Vitra.

The entrance hall of Il Tabacchificio features prominent pieces from Gaetano Pesce’s iconic UP series: the foot, a striking red armchair, and a ball pouf, all sourced from B&B Italia. Industrial hanging lamps, designed by Naviglio by Boffi further enhance the aesthetic of this new space.

Emphasizing sustainability, the renovation utilized reclaimed materials, including vintage doors and other elements from the factory’s original period. Visitors are welcomed into a luminous open area characterized by vaulted ceilings, pristine white walls, and polished concrete floors that enhance the natural light flooding the space. The alignment of the main entrance with a rear exit creates a sense of expansiveness, further complemented by glass and iron fixtures that highlight the building’s industrial rationalist origins. Once a site of rigorous labor, Il Tabacchificio has seamlessly transitioned into a venue for relaxation and enjoyment.
