World’s Largest Iceberg Grounds Near South Georgia, Raises Ecological Concerns
The massive iceberg A23a, recognized as the largest globally, has come to rest near South Georgia, a vital habitat for wildlife in the South Atlantic. The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) reported on March 4 that the iceberg, roughly the size of Rhode Island, is now grounded about 80 kilometers from the island. Having drifted across the Southern Ocean for several months, researchers have been tracking its movements meticulously. Scientists are currently assessing the iceberg’s potential consequences for the fragile ecosystem of the region, particularly concerning marine animals such as penguins and seals.

The BAS details that A23a originated from Antarctica’s Filchner Ice Shelf in 1986 but remained tethered to the seabed for many years. Its movement resumed in 2020, during which it temporarily became stuck near the South Orkney Islands in early 2024. After being freed in December, it charted a course towards South Georgia. Prior to its arrival, concerns arose regarding the potential upheaval to the local biodiversity associated with its presence.
Effects on Wildlife and Ecosystem
As noted in a BBC report, oceanographer Andrew Meijers of BAS expressed that if A23a remains stationary, it is unlikely to pose significant risks to local wildlife. However, should the iceberg shift closer to the island or break apart, this could lead to challenges. Meijers pointed out that disruptions in feeding routes might compel adult penguins and seals to traverse greater distances, thereby diminishing the food supply available for their young and possibly increasing mortality rates.
Weighing the Advantages and Dangers
Marine ecologist Nadine Johnston has highlighted a potential upswing. She explained that A23a could enhance ocean productivity by releasing vital nutrients into the surrounding waters, a phenomenon she termed a “nutrient bomb.” This influx could benefit local predators, including seals and penguins, by improving food availability. Conversely, commercial fishing ventures might encounter difficulties due to disruptions caused by the iceberg. As per BAS reports, previous incidents of iceberg fragmentation have negatively affected fisheries, and A23a’s eventual breakup could also create navigation challenges.
