A24 has successfully secured the distribution rights for “Sorry, Baby,” a darkly comedic drama that marks the directorial debut of Eva Victor, who also penned the script and plays a leading role. The film recently had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, with reports indicating a transaction valued at approximately $8 million.
The film’s premise centers on a college professor, Agnes, who is attempting to rebuild her life following a traumatic experience of sexual assault. The succinct logline summarizes the narrative: “Something bad happened to Agnes. But life goes on… for everyone around her, at least.” Joining Victor in the cast are Naomi Ackie and Lucas Hedges, while acclaimed filmmaker Barry Jenkins takes on the role of producer.
“Sorry, Baby” represents the third acquisition from the Sundance Festival in a market that has been characterized by a cautious atmosphere in Park City this year. The festival has seen other notable deals, including the body horror film “Together,” which Neon acquired for $10 million, and the drama “Train Dreams,” featuring stars Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, which was picked up by Netflix.
The UTA Independent Film Group played a crucial role in structuring the financing and negotiating the terms of the deal for “Sorry, Baby” on behalf of the creative team behind the film. This acquisition was first reported by Deadline, highlighting the ongoing interest from distributors at the festival despite the challenging market conditions.
