Aamir Khan shared insights about seeking marriage counseling during his separation from Reena Dutta, reflecting on his initial reservations.
Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta divorced in 2002.
Aamir Khan maintains a positive relationship with both of his former wives, Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao. Recently, he opened up about attending marriage counseling while separating from Reena. Aimed at salvaging their relationship, the couple participated in counseling sessions for 1.5 years, despite Aamir’s initial objections. Over time, he found the experience valuable and transformative.
In a discussion with Pinkvilla, Aamir described his first encounter with therapy as more akin to counseling than traditional therapy. He recounted, “When Reena and I were parting ways, we saw a marriage counselor for about a year and a half. This was my first experience with such a process, and I remember being strongly opposed to it. I was adamant in my resistance.” He expressed his reluctance to confide in someone he considered a stranger, questioning, “How could I possibly open my heart to a complete stranger?”
Despite his hesitations, Reena encouraged the sessions, emphasizing their importance, and Aamir eventually consented. He explained how his initial experience deviated from his expectations. “At first, I kept quiet and spoke very little. However, after a few sessions, I started to build trust in the therapist,” he noted.
Aamir emphasized that establishing a trusting relationship with a therapist is crucial. As trust develops, individuals often find it easier to articulate thoughts and feelings they may have been hesitant to reveal at the outset.
For context, Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta were married in 1986 and share two children: daughter Ira Khan and son Junaid Khan. Their marriage officially ended in 2002.
