Aanand L Rai Discusses His Upcoming Movie Tere Ishq Mein
Filmmaker Shares Insights on the Project and Its Themes
Upcoming film Tere Ishq Mein, directed by Aanand L Rai, is scheduled to begin production in October. Although the identity of the female lead has not yet been officially announced, speculative names such as Triptii Dimri and Kriti Sanon have surfaced. This project marks Dhanush’s return to Hindi cinema following the success of Atrangi Re, which was also helmed by Rai. Notably, Dhanush’s illustrious Bollywood career began with Rai’s acclaimed film Raanjhanaa.
In a recent interview with News18 Showsha, Rai elaborated on Tere Ishq Mein, emphasizing his intent to revisit the elements that made Raanjhanaa resonate with audiences. “After my experience with Tanu Weds Manu, I was intrigued by how I would approach tragedy in storytelling. When Himanshu (Sharma, the writer) introduced the concept of Raanjhanaa, I was eager to delve into a narrative focused on love interwoven with tragedy,” said the filmmaker.
Rai highlighted the evolution of his storytelling style over the past decade, explaining, “Tanu Weds Manu was light-hearted and captured the essence of my middle-class experience. Raanjhanaa represented growth for me as a filmmaker. Now, eleven years later, I’m keen to explore how I’ve matured as an artist in the realm of tragic storytelling. It’s a fresh narrative, and whether it’s perceived as more nuanced is up to the audience to judge. I am looking forward to examining relationships through a new lens.”
Drawing a connection between his prior work and the new film, he stated, “Tere Ishq Mein embodies the same visceral emotions found in Raanjhanaa—rage, aggression, and fierce love. This is why I believe it shares a universe with Raanjhanaa, maintaining that thematic continuity.”
When questioned about Dhanush’s perspective on potentially repeating himself with this script, Rai expressed confidence in the actor’s growth. “Over the years we’ve collaborated, I’ve seen Dhanush evolve tremendously. He was an extraordinary actor back then, and he’s even more accomplished now—in acting, writing, and directing. His approach would undoubtedly differ, even if the narrative seems similar,” Rai noted.
Further praising Dhanush, Rai remarked, “This reflects the boldness of an exceptional actor. I believe that, even with an identical script, he would bring a unique interpretation. My focus as a filmmaker is to ensure that I don’t recycle ideas.”
Rai also acknowledged the challenges of appealing to contemporary audiences. “In this project, I aim to connect with Gen-Z through a love story that resonates with their experiences. I am crafting Tere Ishq Mein from a personal perspective, presenting a novel story and innovative storytelling techniques,” he concluded.
