A$AP Rocky Acquitted in Assault Trial: Key Highlights
On Tuesday afternoon, a significant verdict emerged from A$AP Rocky’s assault trial, bringing relief to the rapper and his supporters.
A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was acquitted of two felony counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm. These charges stemmed from an incident in which he allegedly brandished a gun and fired it at Terell Ephron, also known as A$AP Relli, a former friend from his childhood.
After deliberating for three hours, the jury reached a unanimous decision, comprising seven women and five men. The ambiance in the courtroom was charged, with Rocky arriving to a flurry of photographers documenting his every movement. He maintained his composure, keeping his head forward as he entered the courthouse.
Inside the courtroom, his family members were present for emotional support; his mother, Renee Black, and sister, Erika B. Mayers, occupied seats in the front row. Notably, his girlfriend, the pop icon Rihanna, discreetly entered through the back before the verdict was announced.
Upon hearing the not guilty verdict, Rocky immediately embraced Rihanna in a joyous reaction. After the jury was excused, he expressed gratitude to its members, stating, “Thank y’all for saving my life. Thank y’all for making the right decision.”
Following the verdict, Rocky’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, spoke to the press, revealing that they had declined a plea deal that could have resulted in a 180-day jail sentence, emphasizing Rocky’s belief in his innocence and labeling the case brought forward by A$AP Relli as “extortion.”
This high-profile trial saw Rihanna present multiple times to lend her support, including during critical moments like the prosecution’s rebuttal. Her involvement garnered attention, particularly when her name was repeatedly mentioned by Deputy District Attorney John Lewin, prompting the judge to intervene.
Rihanna’s commitment to supporting Rocky was evident as she brought their two sons, Riot and RZA, to the courtroom to keep them engaged with a reading of “The Little Mermaid” during proceedings. Following a break, she was seen departing the courthouse with the children, later returning alone.
Last week, Rocky opted not to testify in his defense. If convicted, he faced the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence, with reports indicating potential incarceration of up to 24 years.
