ABB has introduced RoboMasters, an innovative app designed for training users in programming and operating ABB robots. This new tool offers a modular learning experience that allows individuals with varying levels of expertise to progress at their own pace, according to the company.

Michael Hose, the managing director of robotics customer service at ABB, emphasized the importance of skilled personnel in robotic automation, noting that with over 4 million industrial robots currently in operation worldwide, companies across different industries, from manufacturing to retail, must prioritize skill development. He stated, “Offering a flexible and cost-effective training tool, our RoboMasters app opens new possibilities for businesses and individuals to acquire the skills needed to learn and master all aspects of robot operation.”

ABB’s training infrastructure is well established, as currently, more than 25,000 individuals participate annually in courses across 40 global training centers. The RoboMasters app enhances this existing framework by providing a practical, user-friendly platform where users can tailor their own educational journeys.

Addressing the Skills Gap in Robotics

The need for in-house expertise to effectively manage robotic systems often presents challenges for businesses contemplating robotic investments. A global survey by ABB Robotics involving 1,650 companies revealed that 34% cited a lack of skills and complexity as significant barriers to adopting robotic technology. Interestingly, 29% of those surveyed indicated they might reconsider their stance if accessible training options were available.

The RoboMasters app, available in over 50 languages, offers varied learning formats such as interactive lessons, simulations, and challenges designed to deepen users’ understanding of robotics. To foster engagement, the app incorporates social learning elements like gamification, competition, and rewards, enhancing the overall user experience, according to ABB.

Similar to the company’s traditional in-person training, users who successfully complete all modules within a course unit will receive a certificate, validating their competencies in programming and utilizing ABB’s robotic systems.

This app offers businesses a significant advantage by minimizing or even eliminating the logistical challenges and costs associated with sending employees to physical training. For those who have previously attended in-person sessions, the app serves as an effective tool for revisiting and honing skills in a practical manner, helping users keep pace with the latest advancements and methodologies in robotics.

ABB’s Commitment to Innovation and Growth

Based in Zurich, Switzerland, ABB stands as a prominent global player in the fields of robotics and machine automation, offering a diverse product range that includes collaborative robots, industrial automation systems, and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs).

This January, ABB Robotics launched the “no-code” AppStudio, aiming to simplify the development of robotic user interfaces, further demonstrating its commitment to innovation. Additionally, the company has announced plans to inject $120 million into its U.S. operations to bolster production capacity for low-voltage electrification products, addressing the rising demand from critical sectors such as data centers, utilities, and commercial buildings.

These initiatives are part of ABB’s broader strategy to enhance its U.S. presence, including its headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Remarkably, the company has invested over $500 million in its U.S. business over the past three years, underscoring its long-term commitment to growth and innovation in the robotics industry.
