The robotics sector has experienced notable advancements over the past year, influenced by economic challenges, emerging applications, and increasing enthusiasm for humanoid robots and AI technology. At the upcoming RoboBusiness event in California, ABB’s Robotics Division president, John Bubnikovich, will join a panel of industry experts to explore the future of robotic innovation.

Bubnikovich will share the stage with notable figures such as Amit Goel from NVIDIA, Joan-Wilhelm Schwarze from DHL, and Eric Truebenbach from Teradyne Ventures. Together, they will delve into the catalysts driving innovation and discuss strategies for scaling automation technologies.

As a leader in industrial automation and collaborative robotics, ABB Robotics is uniquely positioned to observe and interpret the latest trends within the industry. Prior to the event, Bubnikovich provided insights to The Robot Report regarding his views on the current state of robotics innovation.

Insights on the Robotics Landscape

What stands out as the most significant trend in robotics today?

An important trend in robotics is the integration of artificial intelligence to enhance the intelligence and adaptability of robotic systems. At ABB Robotics, we categorize the industrial applications of AI-driven robotics into four primary areas:

Data-Driven Insights: AI has the capability to analyze extensive datasets, producing actionable insights that inform decision-making processes.
Operational Optimization: AI contributes to efficiency by optimizing everything from comprehensive energy management to intricate planning of robotic movements.
Enhanced Capabilities: AI empowers robots to perform an expansive array of complex tasks that were once difficult to automate, enabling quicker and more accurate execution in unpredictable environments.
Collaboration Between Humans and Machines: AI technologies facilitate user-friendly interaction with robots, allowing individuals without coding expertise to effectively control and direct robotic systems.

What guidance would you offer for achieving product-market fit in a challenging market?

Robotic original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their system integrator (SI) partners need to develop a close relationship with both current and potential clients to thoroughly understand their requirements and the specific performance outcomes they aim to achieve.

The rapid evolution of robotic technologies has democratized access to automation across various sectors, many of which are nascent and lack established benchmarks. Consequently, OEMs and SIs should adopt a consultative approach, collaborating closely with clients to optimize results. It is also crucial to recognize that deploying robotic systems in new applications often requires considerable time for specifying, testing, and installation.

Innovative tools like ABB’s RobotStudio allow for offline simulation and programming, enabling users to experiment with system designs and performance before making a commitment.

What advice would you give to emerging robotics startups?

First and foremost, ensure that there is a viable market demand for your technology and aim to be the best solution available for clients seeking your offerings. Engaging with potential end users in your target sector is essential to test and refine your product.

Adaptability is key, so be prepared to swiftly adjust your technology based on insights gathered from potential customers. Additionally, establish a robust network of investors while setting realistic expectations for growth and profitability. Focus on perfecting your core technology before considering any expansions to meet the needs of a growing customer base.

What are you most excited about for RoboBusiness?

I’m enthusiastic about participating in the keynote panel alongside other industry leaders and fostering connections with peers and experts attending the event. I also look forward to exploring the innovative technologies showcased by both startups and more established companies at the exhibition. Despite ABB’s longstanding presence as a robot OEM, we prioritize maintaining an entrepreneurial mindset. Engaging with fellow innovators will undoubtedly be an invigorating experience!

Join the Robotics Community at RoboBusiness 2024

RoboBusiness will not only cover advancements in robotics but also address essential business and investment considerations vital for managing a robotics enterprise. Notable keynote speakers will include:
