Students Embark on a 12-Year Video Journey to 2036
A select group of students from Abbotsford, B.C., have been cast in a unique video initiative set to track their growth over the next twelve years. Eight students from École Clearbrook Elementary School have been chosen for the ‘Journey to 2036’ series, a project initiated by the Abbotsford School District.
Principal Erica Hopkins explained that the selection process sought students who exhibited confidence and a willingness to engage with the camera. “Being six years old and wanting to be in front of the camera isn’t easy, so we focused on inviting those who were outgoing and enthusiastic about the experience,” she noted. The excitement of participating in a project that felt like stepping into the spotlight was met with enthusiasm from both students and their families.
The project’s framework involves chronicling the lives of these eight students from Grade One to their graduation in Grade Twelve, which will take place in 2036. This initiative aims to provide a comprehensive narrative of their educational journey.
Creating Lasting Memories
Hopkins emphasized the significance of documenting this period in the students’ lives. “The greatest benefit will be for these children and their families, providing them with a visual history to reflect on as the years progress,” she said.
Superintendent of Schools Sean Nosek highlighted the plan to engage in monthly discussions with the students, asking about their aspirations and school experiences. “I’m looking forward to asking them what they enjoy most about school, their thoughts on educational improvements, and their future dreams,” he stated. He expressed enthusiasm for tracking the students’ development, particularly as they transition through different school phases, from elementary to high school.
Nosek acknowledged that while some students might leave the district, he is committed to following their journey as closely as possible. “It’s important for us to capture these voices and perspectives as they evolve over time,” he added.
Engaging the Community
The overarching goal of the ‘Journey to 2036’ project is to showcase the voices of the students and include their families and the broader community in the narrative. “We wanted to find an innovative way to incorporate feedback from our youngest learners and engage with parents,” Nosek explained. The school district is noted for its emphasis on student voice, making this project a natural extension of that commitment.
A teaser for the “Journey to 2036” series has been shared online, with plans for monthly video releases that will continue to document the students’ experiences throughout their educational journey.
