[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 4, Episode 22, “Straight to Hell.”]

The long-awaited Season 4 finale of Abbott Elementary has officially aired, featuring an exciting field trip that took the students to the iconic Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia.

This particular outing was especially significant for teacher Janine (played by Quinta Brunson), as it marked her first encounter with Gregory’s (Tyler James Williams) father, Martin (Orlando Jones). Confident in her ability to impress him, Janine’s excitement turned into apprehension when Gregory cautioned her that his dad might not connect well with her vibrant personality.

To prepare for the meeting, Janine playfully borrowed Gregory’s blazer as part of her strategy to adopt his mannerisms in hopes of winning over Martin. This humorous ploy led to a series of comedic moments as she tried to adjust her behavior to fit in, ultimately creating a mix of hilarity and confusion. However, her genuine dedication to the students quickly took priority, prompting her to abandon the act and embrace her natural silliness.

Martin, surprisingly, revealed a more playful side himself, leading to a heartfelt exchange where they discussed the importance of not taking life too seriously. Meanwhile, Ava (Janelle James) took the reins as principal, accompanied by her new boyfriend O’Shon (Matthew Law), even momentarily setting aside her distinct fashion sense to sport a pair of outlandishly amusing earrings gifted by him.

As for Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph), Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter), Jacob (Chris Perfetti), and Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis), they found themselves managing a group of older children who struggled to relate to the museum’s playful atmosphere, which catered mainly to a younger audience. Their experience took a creative turn when a museum employee suggested they stage a play inspired by their teachers, igniting enthusiasm among the older kids and resulting in amusing impressions performed by Barbara, Melissa, and Jacob in the museum’s theater.

Co-showrunner Patrick Schumacker expressed his enthusiasm for filming at the renowned museum, highlighting the staff’s eagerness to accommodate the crew by closing the venue for three days. Initially, Janine had envisioned a field trip to the aquarium, a common choice for Philadelphia schoolchildren, but plans shifted as the team found inspiration at the Please Touch Museum.

Schumacker noted that the location held sentimental value for Quinta Brunson, who grew up in the city, which added an extra layer of connection to the episode. The shoot was enhanced by the presence of local celebrity Jordan Mailata, a Philadelphia Eagles player, who visited the set with the prestigious Lombardi Trophy, adding to the fun atmosphere.

Schumacker and fellow co-showrunner Justin Halpern focused on Janine’s efforts to impress Gregory’s father as a central theme, flipping the traditional sitcom narrative of parental approval into a poignant exploration of Gregory’s understanding of his father’s character. Halpern emphasized the show’s ability to subvert common sitcom tropes in a way that resonates on a deeper level.

Gregory’s humorous reactions, particularly when he hears his father’s playful “squirrel” voice, showcased the comedic talents of Tyler James Williams, with Halpern praising his nuanced performance. The faculty’s playful impersonations of one another during the student play provided additional comedic highlights, with Schumacker acknowledging the bravery showcased by Chris Perfetti and others in embracing the comedic challenge.

The episode wrapped up without leaving viewers hanging on multiple cliffhangers, a departure from previous season finales. Though Schumacker and Halpern have yet to start plotting Season 5, Halpern hinted at the wealth of untold stories still awaiting exploration, guaranteeing that more entertaining moments lie ahead.
