Note: This article contains spoilers from “Abbott Elementary” Season 4, Episode 22.

The Season 4 finale of “Abbott Elementary” marks a significant shift as Ava (played by Janelle James) is reinstated as principal after her earlier dismissal, a move that many fans may have anticipated following the tumultuous events of the season. As Ava resumes her role, she embarks on what she amusingly dubs her “second term,” introducing a series of controversial executive decisions that reflect the chaotic climate of recent political discourse.

Showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker emphasized that while Ava’s return does not indicate a shift in her zany persona, it does suggest some personal growth. Halpern pointed out that Ava’s choice to return to Abbott demonstrates her commitment, noting that she could have pursued more lucrative opportunities elsewhere. “She is growing a little bit,” Halpern remarked, suggesting that the audience is starting to view her character in a more nuanced light.

Schumacker echoed this sentiment, highlighting Ava’s burgeoning confidence and her willingness to seek assistance from other teachers, showcasing vulnerability that had previously been masked by her bold demeanor. “Inside there’s no hint of imposter syndrome or anything like that anymore,” he stated, suggesting a depth to her character that has evolved since her earlier dismissal.

In addition to Ava’s journey, Season 4 placed significant focus on her connections with family and a romantic interest in O’Shon (played by Matthew Law). The upcoming fifth season promises to delve into new storylines highlighting other characters, such as Melissa’s relationship with Captain Robinson (Mike O’Malley) and offering fresh perspectives for Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) as she faces challenges with older students.

Below, the showrunners discuss the implications of Ava’s return for Gregory’s (Tyler James Williams) aspirations, the importance of family dynamics in character development, and their hopes for the future of the series.

TheWrap: As Ava returns, Gregory leaves his role as interim principal. Does he find fulfillment in going back to teaching, or does he still hold aspirations of being principal?

Halpern: Gregory doesn’t want Ava’s job; he respects her too much for that. While he admires her leadership and enjoys her role as principal, his brief experience as interim principal has sparked something within him, reminding him of his initial ambitions. It’s a pivotal moment that could lead to potential exploration in future episodes, as it highlights his capabilities and what he once desired.

Janine’s relationship with Gregory’s father is also introduced this season. What led you to develop that backstory for him?

Halpern: We’ve been subtly uncovering Gregory’s background. His character is not one to express feelings openly, so meeting his father provided an opportunity to explore a deeper narrative. Rather than the typical trope of seeking parental approval, it became a story about Gregory gaining awareness of his father, which in turn, aids his own self-discovery.

With Gregory’s father coming to meet Janine, is there a possibility of Taraji P. Henson returning as Janine’s mother?

Schumacker: That’s certainly a possibility! We have loved collaborating with Taraji, and while her schedule may pose a challenge, we’re hopeful for her return if the circumstances allow.

Over the years, we’ve encountered various family members. Who else would you like to introduce?

Halpern: I’m particularly interested in exploring Mr. Johnson’s family. There’s so much potential there for some great storylines.

Schumacker: I would love to see Mr. Johnson’s grandfather; we often joke about him referencing his alive grandparents in our writers’ room.

This season tackled issues like gentrification and community challenges. What message do you hope resonates with viewers?

Halpern: Our primary aim is to make people laugh, but we also wanted to highlight the realities of gentrification in a sincere manner. This storyline reflects what is occurring in real neighborhoods—an essential push for communities to invest in their schools and recognize the value of long-established neighborhoods. We wanted viewers to appreciate the importance of supporting public education and the communities that have long been foundational to these areas.

Ava’s relationship with O’Shon gained special attention this season. Will he return next season, despite his role in Netflix’s “Nemesis”?

Schumacker: We certainly hope so! If scheduling permits, we’d love to have him back, as he brings a wonderful energy to the show.

Reflecting on the season’s surprising twists, can fans expect similar developments in the future?

We are still in the early stages of plotting Season 5, so it’s difficult to predict. While we typically have a more straightforward trajectory in mind, this past season’s unpredictability worked well to wrap up certain narratives. We definitely see the value in such open-ended storytelling, but it can complicate production. We may consider employing this approach again, although it can be challenging to ensure everything stays on schedule.

The recent crossover with “It’s Always Sunny” was a highlight. What insights have you taken from that experience for potential future crossovers?

Schumacker: The key takeaway is the importance of determination. It might seem impossible at first, but with the right collaboration, remarkable things can happen. Our connections within the industry helped facilitate that crossover, making it a possibility. Though we aren’t actively seeking another crossover just yet, we are certainly open to the idea when the time is right.
