ABC is making strides to solidify its reputation as a powerhouse for both drama and comedy, recently announcing renewals for several of its most popular series. Among the shows getting the green light are 9-1-1, Grey’s Anatomy, The Rookie, and Will Trent. This renewal will push 9-1-1 to its ninth season, while Grey’s Anatomy will be heading into its 22nd season, solidifying its status as one of the longest-running dramas in television history. Additionally, The Rookie will return for its eighth season, and Will Trent for its fourth. Another notable renewal is for Shifting Gears, which stars Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, securing a second season.
ABC’s commitment to its programming continues with the renewal of High Potential alongside the acclaimed comedy Abbott Elementary, both led by Quinta Brunson. However, uncertainty surrounds Doctor Odyssey, which features Dr. Max Bankman (played by Joshua Jackson) operating on a luxury cruise ship. With a cast that includes Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, and Don Johnson, the show has drawn about 2 million viewers per episode and even had a crossover event with 9-1-1. Whether this is sufficient for a second season remains to be seen.
‘9-1-1’ & ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Are Two of ABC’s Most Popular Shows
According to reports from Variety, ABC has decided not to move forward with any new pilot orders at this time. Nevertheless, exciting developments are on the horizon, including a straight-to-series spin-off titled 9-1-1: Nashville, with Chris O’Donnell set to star.
The original 9-1-1 series, created by Ryan Murphy, boasts a star-studded cast, including Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. The show follows the daily challenges of the 118 first responders, tackling unique and often life-threatening situations. With strong viewership numbers supporting its 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a robust 7.9/10 IMDb score, it has proven to resonate well with audiences.
Grey’s Anatomy, which premiered on March 27, 2005, continues to capture viewers long after its inception. Its upcoming 22nd season further cements its legacy as one of the most enduring medical dramas on television. Despite numerous cast changes throughout the years, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens Jr. have retained their roles, contributing to the series’ historic run.
