Last Updated: January 03, 2025, 22:37 IST
Controversy Surrounds Ranbir Kapoor’s Beef Comment from 2011
Renowned singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya has ignited yet another controversy, this time directing his remarks towards Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor in light of the latter’s attendance at the Ram Mandir inauguration in Ayodhya. In a recent conversation with Bollywood Thikana, Bhattacharya expressed his disapproval, saying, “When Ram Mandir was inaugurated, a person who eats beef was invited, aur aap Gau Mata karahe hain.”
The ceremony, marking a significant event for many in the community, witnessed an array of celebrities, including the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, and Vicky Kaushal. However, Bhattacharya’s veiled critique aimed at Kapoor triggered a wave of discussions among fans and the public about morality and representation in Bollywood.
Kapoor’s previous remarks about consuming beef during a 2011 television interview resurfaced in 2022, reviving discussions surrounding his public persona. This renewed scrutiny led to protests from the Bajrang Dal during the promotional events of his film, *Brahmastra*, resulting in activists blocking him and his wife Alia Bhatt from entering the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The protests stemmed from the belief that Kapoor’s past statements were disrespectful to cultural and religious sentiments.
In addition to his comments regarding Kapoor, Abhijeet shared reflections on his experience with the 2013 film *Besharam*, where he performed the song “Dil Ka Jo Haal Hai” alongside Shreya Ghoshal. He candidly stated, “Thank God, I am not a singer of this era. I sang a song, ‘Dil Ka Jo Haal Hai,’ in a super flop film. The song wasn’t a hit. No one knows about the song’s film. However, if you play the song, you would know who sang it.”
Abhijeet elaborated on the struggles within the music industry, noting, “Even if the floppiest song plays, people would know whose song it is, and not the hero or film attached to it. The property belongs to the music company. They have the rights, and we don’t get royalty. However, everyone has ears and the voice that goes to the ear and heart is mine.”
Directed by Abhinav Kashyap, *Besharam* featured Ranbir Kapoor alongside Pallavi Sharda and boasted a cast that included Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor. Despite high expectations, the film was met with largely unfavorable reviews and struggled at the box office, a situation that Abhijeet did not hesitate to touch upon when discussing his work and the film’s legacy.
