KTM’s Future Worries Pedro Acosta and His Team

MotoGP rookie sensation Pedro Acosta is reportedly concerned about the future of the KTM team as it navigates significant financial challenges, according to insights shared by his manager, Albert Valera. Recent announcements have disclosed that KTM is grappling with a staggering debt of approximately 3 billion euros, leading the Austrian manufacturer to enter self-administration in light of disappointing bike sales.

In an effort to protect its MotoGP ambitions, KTM’s leadership has opted to suspend the development of its motorcycles. This strategic pause is seen as a necessary measure to maintain the integrity of the racing project.

This season marks Acosta’s debut in MotoGP with the Tech3 team. He is set to transition to the factory KTM squad in 2025, where he will replace Jack Miller, joining teammate Brad Binder. However, Valera revealed during a podcast on Motorsport.com’s Spanish edition that the dire financial situation at KTM was not disclosed at the time of contract negotiations, which took place in May.

“We were under the impression that we were dealing with a powerful organization with substantial financial backing,” Valera noted, emphasizing the unexpected nature of the current circumstances. “It’s been tough to process this news, but we are reassured that KTM plans to continue its operations in MotoGP, ensuring that Acosta will indeed have a bike for next season.”

Nonetheless, there are growing concerns regarding the competitiveness of the machines Acosta will receive under these strained conditions. Valera elaborated on the situation, stating that when they entered the agreement, they believed they were aligning with a winning project backed by a company enjoying significant profitability poised to challenge performance giants like Ducati. The swift downturn in KTM’s fortunes has left them questioning the stability and future direction of the team.

“The situation has changed drastically in just six months, leaving us to wonder how things have reached this point,” Valera said. “It’s essential to be honest about the concerns we have. Both Pedro and I, along with his family and team, are understandably anxious about the implications of KTM’s financial issues.”

Although Valera indicated that dissolving the contract with KTM would be a complex undertaking, he acknowledged the difficulty in placing trust in the manufacturer’s assurances. “The challenge is to have faith in what we’re being told, despite how unforeseen the current issues are,” he explained. “Previously, we were led to believe that KTM was a dominant force capable of contending with the likes of Ducati, which no longer appears to be the case.”

Looking ahead, Valera stated that contemplating a contract termination for 2025 is not practical at this time, given that KTM has yet to breach the agreement. He affirmed, “As it stands, it is business as usual. We await further communication from KTM, but for now, they remain committed to competing in the championship.”

The landscape for the 2025 MotoGP season is already taking shape with most top teams filled, challenging Acosta’s prospects should he desire to switch from KTM. Nonetheless, Valera mentioned that several other manufacturers have expressed interest in Acosta’s situation. “I maintain ongoing dialogues with various factories that have reached out to inquire about Pedro’s status and to wish us well during this time,” he stated, underscoring the potential support for Acosta should the need arise.

“It’s clear that any manufacturer would appreciate having Pedro on their roster, given his talent and age. He is a remarkable prospect still early in his career,” Valera concluded.
