Adam DeVine’s Journey Through Health Challenges

Adam DeVine continues to navigate the physical ramifications of a traumatic childhood incident, yet his outlook appears significantly brighter than when he was initially informed that he might not survive.

In a recent conversation on the podcast In Depth With Graham, DeVine opened up about the ongoing muscle spasms he experiences as a result of his injuries from a severe accident at the age of 11 when he was struck by a cement truck while riding his bicycle.

“There are still many uncertainties regarding my condition,” he shared. “I dealt with these spasms extensively, and while they are still present, the medical community remains puzzled,” he noted. “At one point, I was told that my situation was dire. Just last year, I received that kind of news.”

The initial medical assessments indicated that he might have stiff person syndrome, a rare and chronic ailment characterized by muscle stiffness and involuntary spasms, as detailed by the Cleveland Clinic.

To seek clarity, DeVine consulted with a leading specialist who was instrumental in defining the condition. “When I met with him, he quickly dismissed the diagnosis. He stated, ‘You do not have it. This is a direct result of your childhood accident. While the spasms are somewhat unexplainable, it could be that your body has tightened up so much that it’s struggling to cope,’” DeVine recounted.

Reflecting on his experience during the pandemic, DeVine suspects that his rigorous fitness routine may have intensified his symptoms. “In hindsight, I believe my body became overly tense and tight, which led to these complications. It’s been three years of managing pain—whether sitting, standing, or walking. I have to incorporate foam rolling and stretching into my daily routine,” he explained.

The Pitch Perfect star has undergone various hip surgeries, yet he credits a stem cell treatment he received in Colombia with significantly improving his condition. “I feel like I am in the best shape I have been in years,” he remarked. “Currently, I’m experiencing an improvement I haven’t felt in a long time.”

While DeVine has aspirations of being an action comedy star, he is recalibrating his expectations. “These days, I’m embracing the idea of being a comedic character alongside a dedicated action star who handles the heavy lifting. While I always enjoyed performing stunts, I’m learning to balance my ambitions with the reality of my physical limitations,” he stated.
