Adele has made it clear that she has no intention of revisiting one of her earlier hits anytime soon. On August 2, the acclaimed singer kicked off her 10-night residency at the specially designed Munich Messe arena, captivating a crowd of 75,000 fans with performances of beloved tracks such as “Hello,” “Easy On Me,” and “Set Fire To The Rain.”
During her opening night, she surprised audiences by performing “Chasing Pavements,” a song from 2008, marking its first live performance in six years.
In a video captured by fans, Adele shared her reasons for not including the track in her recent concerts. She revealed her decision to retire “Chasing Pavements” from her performances after the Munich residency, citing her dissatisfaction with the way she vocalizes the lyrics as she ages. “The reason I don’t sing this song very often, and I shan’t sing it again after this Munich residency, is because of the way I pronounce the words in this song when I was 19 years old,” she explained to her audience, adding, “I sound like I’m 19 years old. When I sing it now I still sound 19 years old and it annoys me.” However, she expressed her affection for her German fans, promising to sing the song during this series of shows if they would sing along with her.
Originally released in January 2008, “Chasing Pavements” served as the second single from Adele’s debut studio album, 19. The song enjoyed commercial success, reaching No. 2 on the U.K. singles charts and earning a nomination for the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards for its music video.
On the same night, Adele took a moment to reflect on her transformative hit “Someone Like You” from the 21 album. She conveyed deep emotion when discussing how the song impacted her life, revealing, “I wrote it at a time in my life when I was at the lowest I’ve ever been.” She further expressed a wish that someone had informed her during her youth that the song would resonate with so many people in the future.
Adele’s European Residency
Following the completion of her Las Vegas residency, Adele announced in January her upcoming performances in Munich, Germany, which are set to span ten shows throughout the summer of 2024. In her announcement, she mentioned, “I couldn’t think of a more wonderful way to spend my summer and end this beautiful phase of my life and career with shows closer to home during such an exciting summer.”
