Adele’s Haunted Mansion: A $7.5 Million Property Stigmatized by Ghostly Rumors

In a twist of fate, the property where singer Adele once stayed is struggling to find a buyer, thanks in large part to the ghostly tales associated with it. The Lock House, a historic estate located in Partridge Green, West Sussex, has reportedly remained unsellable according to its current owner, who claims that Adele’s comments about the mansion being haunted have tarnished its marketability.

The BBC reports that the owner, who purchased the 32-acre estate in 2003, has faced challenges in unloading the mansion for over 14 years. In an effort to adapt to the situation, plans have been submitted to reconfigure the Grade II-listed ten-bedroom home into three separate living units and to convert a garage into a cottage.

According to the renovation proposal, “The first tenant, Adele, stayed for six months and blighted the property by saying it is haunted.” The document contends that this statement has significantly hindered the property’s marketing efforts, which continue to be affected by the lingering reputation.

Adele’s occupancy of the mansion, originally constructed in 1909, drew media attention when she invited Anderson Cooper inside during an interview for CBS’s 60 Minutes. While she did not categorically declare the house haunted, she expressed that it was “quite scary” and mentioned its past as a convent. Following her comments, tabloid coverage intensified, with reports alleging that Adele felt so spooked that she hired a bodyguard for comfort during her stay, fearing the expansive property would leave her feeling too isolated at night.

The owner of Lock House has indicated that the closest they came to selling the estate was in 2020, but an interested buyer reportedly withdrew their offer upon discovering the property’s alleged haunted status. With an asking price around $7.5 million, the nearly 20,000-square-foot mansion features luxurious amenities, including both indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a tennis court, a helipad, a sauna, and a wine cellar.

This eerie saga highlights how a celebrity’s commentary can profoundly impact property value and desirability. Whether or not the tales of spirits lingering in the halls of the Lock House hold any truth, the current owner’s efforts to mitigate the stigma remain an uphill battle in the competitive real estate market.
