AI Is Replacing Prompt Engineers

In 2023, the field of prompt engineering emerged as the most sought-after position within the tech industry. This specialized role involved training artificial intelligence systems using tailored prompts and instructions, fueled by the rapid integration of AI technologies from Silicon Valley into everyday business practices. Major technology companies were compensating workers in this field with six-figure salaries.

However, the landscape is changing.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the demand for prompt engineers is already on the decline.

In light of this shift, technology leaders are questioning the sustainability of this role. “Two years ago, the buzz was all about the need for prompt engineers,” noted Jared Spataro, Microsoft’s chief marketing officer for AI. “But the reality is turning out to be quite different.”

Spataro elaborated that advancements in large language models (LLMs) have made AI more conversational and contextually aware. These systems can now engage in follow-up questions, significantly diminishing the necessity for a flawlessly crafted prompt.

Currently, there are approximately 3,000 job listings featuring “prompt engineer” on Indeed, though this position is reportedly plateauing according to Hannah Calhoon, Vice President of AI at Indeed.

In a related trend, hiring managers are increasingly seeking candidates with experience in ChatGPT, offering salaries that can reach up to $800,000.

The phenomenon of artificial intelligence replacing jobs is not unprecedented. In 2023, Goldman Sachs estimated that AI might have the potential to automate 300 million full-time positions, while McKinsey projected that up to 375 million workers could face job displacement due to AI by 2030.

It is noteworthy that despite extensive discussions surrounding AI’s encroachment into various job markets—from financial sectors to manufacturing—this technology has begun to replace those who have contributed to its development.
