AI Revolutionizes Coding at Microsoft, Google, and Meta

In 2025, significant investments from major tech firms in AI infrastructure are making headlines, with leaders from companies like Meta and Microsoft sharing insights on their AI implementations.

During a recent discussion at Meta’s LlamaCon conference, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that AI is responsible for generating 20% to 30% of the code used in various company projects. This contribution varies depending on the programming language; for instance, AI is adept at producing “fantastic” Python code, while its proficiency in C++ is comparatively lower.

Nadella also highlighted Microsoft’s reliance on advanced AI agents—sophisticated software that can execute complex tasks autonomously—to assist in code review processes.

Turning to Meta, Mark Zuckerberg stated that while he does not have a precise figure, the company aims to have AI contribute to half of its software development efforts within the next year. “That will just kind of increase from there,” he noted.

In a January podcast with Joe Rogan, Zuckerberg mentioned that Meta is actively developing AI capable of writing code at a level comparable to that of mid-level engineers. The goal is to have a substantial amount of their coding tasks performed by these AI systems rather than traditional human engineers this year.

Meanwhile, Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently remarked during an earnings call that AI is currently responsible for creating “well over 30%” of new code, an increase from 25% just a few months prior. Pichai noted a growing acceptance among employees for AI-suggested code, expressing optimism about further developments in this field.

Other executives are making bold predictions about AI’s role in programming. Microsoft Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott asserted on the 20VC podcast that within five years, AI could potentially handle 95% of coding tasks. Dario Amodei, the CEO of AI startup Anthropic, expressed an even bolder view, claiming that AI could write “essentially all of the code” for companies within the next year.

In parallel, Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn indicated that the company would substitute human contract workers with AI solutions. Shopify’s CEO Tobias Lutke has communicated to employees that proficient use of AI is now a “fundamental expectation.”

As tech firms increasingly adopt AI for coding functions, a notable trend of layoffs among human software engineers is emerging. According to data from layoff tracker Layoffs.fyi, over 51,000 tech workers have been dismissed across 112 companies this year alone.

With these transformations underway, the future of coding, and potentially many tech jobs, remains uncertain as AI continues to evolve and integrate into the fabric of the industry.
