AI Startup Anthropic Advises Job Seekers: Please Avoid Using AI in Applications

Anthropic has positioned its Claude chatbot as a highly capable writing assistant, yet the company has explicitly discouraged applicants from utilizing AI technology, such as Claude, when completing their job applications. This policy spans nearly all of the company’s approximately 150 open positions, underscoring a preference for authentic human input in the hiring process.

All job listings from Anthropic stipulate that applicants must personally craft their submission materials without the aid of AI tools. This requirement applies across various roles, including those in finance, communications, and sales, reflecting a consistent approach to job applications.

The guideline is detailed in the application’s section labeled “AI Policy for Application,” a detail first highlighted by open-source developer Simon Willison. The policy states: “While we encourage people to use AI systems during their role to help them work faster and more effectively, please do not use AI assistants during the application process. We want to understand your personal interest in Anthropic without mediation through an AI system, and we also want to evaluate your non-AI-assisted communication skills. Please indicate ‘Yes’ if you have read and agree.”

Even roles such as the mobile product designer, which had earlier been unmarked by the AI policy, are now included under this directive. A recent confirmation has indicated that all available positions carry this stipulation.

This stance on AI usage in applications mirrors a trend observed among numerous prominent U.S. employers. In an April survey conducted by Resume Genius, it was revealed that AI-generated resumes were viewed as a significant deterrent by hiring managers, with over half (53%) stating they would be less inclined to hire such candidates.

Despite the clear caution from many employers, job seekers continue to leverage artificial intelligence as a tool in their application processes. A report published in August by the Financial Times indicated that nearly half of applicants use AI to enhance their candidacy, including tasks like drafting cover letters and optimizing resumes for keyword recognition. This trend has resulted in candidates submitting approximately double the number of applications for each job posting.

What Is Claude?

Claude, developed by Anthropic, is a prominent AI chatbot recognized for its versatility, being capable of assisting users with everything from health coaching to legal guidance. Recently, the New York Times referred to it as the “tech insiders’ chatbot of choice,” highlighting its ability to generate thoughtful discussion and empathetic dialogue similar to that of a human being. Claude is offered in a free version, alongside a Pro plan costing $18 monthly and a Teams package priced at $25 per user per month. Users have described interactions with Claude as feeling more personal and engaging compared to traditional chatbots.

“It’s eerily good,” one user commented on X, expressing a sentiment shared by many who interact with the system. “This is the first time ever that I’m interacting with an LLM and have to keep consciously reminding myself that it’s not actually sentient.”

While Claude does not currently reach the same user volume as its rival ChatGPT, which reportedly enjoys over 300 million weekly users, it still recorded 73.8 million visits to its website in December, according to Similarweb.

Furthermore, Anthropic is actively pursuing substantial funding, being in advanced discussions to secure $2 billion in financing. If successful, this deal could elevate Anthropic’s valuation to $60 billion, placing it among the top five most valuable startups in the U.S., alongside notable companies such as SpaceX, OpenAI, Stripe, and Databricks.
