Aimee Lou Wood, known for her role as Chelsea in The White Lotus Season 3, shared insights into her experiences filming intimate scenes alongside co-star Walton Goggins, who plays Rick. While she has navigated similar scenes in her past work, Wood noted that this particular experience was distinct. In a recent GQ interview, she articulated what made the filming of these scenes feel more positive, and how her perspective on intimacy in her previous roles has evolved.
Building Unity with Castmates
Prior to filming her sensual scenes, Wood connected with fellow cast members Michelle Monaghan and Carrie Coon. The trio enjoyed a dinner where they discussed the nuances of their respective scenes, particularly considering the role of nudity within the narratives. Wood remarked to GQ that these discussions fostered a sense of camaraderie and reflected on her earlier feelings of isolation during her time on Sex Education. “What I’ve come to realize is that the discomfort I felt was compounded by thinking I was alone in that experience,” she explained.
She contrasted her time on Sex Education with her current role, revealing how some of her peers didn’t experience the same level of exposure in that season. “The feeling of being alone in that intensity was difficult,” Wood stated.
Reflections on Sex Education
Wood has previously praised Sex Education for being one of the first shows to implement intimacy coordinators, a move she felt enhanced the on-set experience. Nevertheless, she confessed to feeling anxious when filming a masturbation scene during the first season. “When you’re alone in those moments, there’s no chance to alleviate the awkwardness with a co-star,” she shared. As time has passed, Wood noted that she has grown more discerning regarding intimate scenes. In a February discussion with Elle, she expressed how her experience on Sex Education taught her valuable lessons on the necessity of certain scenes.
“With my earlier experiences, I learned a lot. Now, I’m asking myself, ‘Do we really need this? Can this story be conveyed through a glance or a kiss?’” she elaborated. Wood emphasized the importance of questioning whether a scene truly serves the narrative, advocating for storytelling that doesn’t rely on explicitness when a subtler approach may suffice.
An Active Role in Storytelling
Wood expressed that during her time working on the chemistry between Rick and Chelsea, she actively participated in decisions regarding their intimate scenes. She reflected on her decision-making process, revealing, “I wanted to maintain the scenes because they reveal aspects of their relationship that are crucial for the audience to understand.”
As for the nature of Chelsea and Rick’s relationship, Wood indicated complexities, suggesting that Chelsea’s attraction to Rick stemmed from unresolved personal issues. “If she took the time to address her past through therapy, she might have made a different choice,” Wood remarked, hinting at the deeper psychological layers influencing the characters’ interactions.
