Tragic Crash of Medical Transport Jet in Philadelphia
A medical transport jet, heading for Missouri and carrying a child along with five other individuals, crashed in Northeast Philadelphia on Friday evening.
The aircraft was operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, a service specialized in global air medical transportation.
This particular service is noted for previously assisting Boston Red Sox icon and Hall of Famer David Ortiz when he faced a critical emergency following a shooting in the Dominican Republic on June 9, 2019. Ortiz suffered life-threatening injuries and underwent emergency surgery.
During the medical intervention, a portion of Ortiz’s intestines, his gallbladder, and part of his colon were removed, and he sustained damage to his liver. The following day, a Jet Rescue plane transported him to Boston, where he underwent additional treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital, including a second surgery.
After nearly three weeks in the intensive care unit, Ortiz was moved to a regular hospital room on June 22, 2019, and he was discharged on July 26, 2019.
In a turn of events related to the shooting, Rolfi Ferreira-Cruz was identified as the suspect, but it was later revealed that Ortiz was not the intended target. The Dominican Attorney General confirmed on June 19, 2019, that Ortiz was mistakenly shot; Sixto David Fernandez was actually the target of the attack.
According to reports, the Jet Rescue Learjet 55 crashed shortly after taking off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport around 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
In a statement, Jet Rescue expressed their primary concern for the family of the patient aboard the flight, along with the safety of their personnel and any other individuals who may have been impacted on the ground.
President Donald Trump responded to the incident on Truth Social, expressing his sorrow regarding the crash. He noted, “So sad to see the plane go down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More innocent souls lost. Our people are totally engaged,” and commended first responders for their efforts in handling the situation.
This tragic incident follows closely on the heels of another aviation disaster, where an American Airlines passenger aircraft collided with an Army Black Hawk Helicopter near Reagan National Airport, resulting in the loss of 67 lives.
