Al Pacino Reflects on Fatherhood and His Upcoming Memoir
Al Pacino, the iconic actor renowned for his roles in classic films, is taking a moment to celebrate fatherhood as he embraces his youngest child growing up. In a recent interview with The New York Times, published on October 5, the 84-year-old shared insights about his son, Roman, born in June 2023 with partner Noor Alfallah.
During the interview, Pacino expressed joy in witnessing Roman’s early development, stating, “he’s come into the world a little more now. He’s learning things.” His reflections on fatherhood at this stage in life have inspired him to share more of his personal journey in his upcoming memoir, Sonny Boy, set for release on October 8.
“That has been a campaign for me to stick around a little longer if it’s possible,” Pacino remarked, highlighting the profound impact of fatherhood, even at this later stage of his life.
Choosing Roman’s First Movie
Pacino was also asked about which film his son might enjoy as a primer to understanding his father’s acting legacy. He humorously suggested that Roman should start with Adam Sandler’s 2011 comedy, Jack and Jill, in which Pacino makes a memorable cameo as himself in a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial.
The actor reflected on the circumstances surrounding that role, recalling, “I think that’s funny. It came at a time in my life that I needed it, because it was after I found out I had no more money.” The candidness around his financial difficulties during that period adds depth to his narrative.
Pacino’s role involved a memorable moment where he sings and dances, adopting the name “Dunk” in reference to the Dunkaccino drink. He expressed his disbelief over how many people mistakenly think he actually made the commercial, emphasizing the blurred lines between reality and performance in Hollywood. “You know how many people think I actually made that commercial? I mean, it’s just so unfair,” he noted.
A Legacy of Fatherhood
Pacino and Alfallah welcomed their son Roman amidst excitement about expanding their family. An insider shared that he has always cherished being a father, saying, “Al loves being a father and always has. He is excited.” The actor’s commitment to parenthood has remained a core part of his identity throughout his life.
The Oscar-winning actor has three older children: Julie Marie, 34, from his relationship with Jan Tarrant, and twins Anton and Olivia, 23, with ex-partner Beverly D’Angelo. This new chapter in Pacino’s life reflects both a continuity and an evolution in his role as a father.
Sonny Boy promises to provide readers with a more intimate look at his life and achievements and will be available in bookstores on October 8.
