Tragic Loss: Alabama A&M Linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. Passes Away
Medrick Burnett Jr., a linebacker for Alabama A&M football, has tragically passed away at the young age of 20 due to complications from a severe head injury sustained during a game last month.
Local authorities confirmed that Burnett Jr. died at UAB Hospital at 5:43 PM on Wednesday. His injury occurred during the team’s matchup against Alabama State on October 26, just one day before his birthday. Following the injury, he was treated in the Intensive Care Unit, where it was revealed by his sister that he suffered multiple brain bleeds and significant swelling.
Dominece James, Burnett Jr.’s sister, recounted the difficult medical interventions he underwent: “He had to have a tube to drain to relieve the pressure, and after two days of severe pressure, we had to opt for a craniotomy, which was the last resort to help try to save his life.”
In the wake of this devastating news, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to support Burnett Jr.’s family, which has garnered over $48,000 in contributions.
Initially, Alabama A&M University released a statement announcing the news of Burnett Jr.’s passing but later retracted it. The university claimed it had received notification from an immediate family member the previous night regarding the unfortunate incident.
Before the injury, Burnett Jr., who hailed from California, participated in seven games during the current season, demonstrating promise on the field and earning respect from teammates and coaches alike. His untimely death is a significant loss to the Alabama A&M community and the broader college football landscape.
