Charges Filed Against Alberta RCMP Officer for Sexual Assault
An RCMP officer from Alberta has been charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault of two males in an Airdrie hotel room in 2022.
Leduc Constable Bridget Morla faces two counts of sexual assault, with the incidents reportedly occurring while she was off-duty. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) confirmed that the charges follow a comprehensive investigation that lasted two years.
Morla, who has served as a police officer for 13 years, has been on suspension with pay since the investigation initiated in late 2022. RCMP spokesperson Fraser Logan indicated that this decision was made to ensure the integrity of the investigative process.
Details of the Allegations
The court records reveal that both alleged victims are male. The incidents purportedly happened on December 3, 2022, during a social gathering. Following the events, ASIRT was tasked with the investigation on December 13 of the same year.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
ASIRT’s investigative findings prompted the agency to forward the case to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, which concluded that the evidence was sufficient to warrant prosecution. As a result, Morla was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Airdrie next week.
Oversight and Accountability
ASIRT is responsible for examining incidents involving police that result in significant injury or death, as well as investigating allegations of police misconduct. This case highlights the ongoing need for transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies.
