Alberta’s health minister has announced that a new agency aimed at primary health care, named Primary Care Alberta, is expected to be operational by next month. According to Adriana LaGrange, this initiative is designed to enhance access for residents to primary care providers, such as family doctors and nurse practitioners. The agency will also focus on developing innovative primary care models and improving availability of after-hours services through virtual platforms.
This announcement follows the provincial government’s efforts to restructure Alberta Health Services by splitting it into four distinct agencies. LaGrange highlighted that the existing health services body has struggled to maintain an adequate focus on primary care, resulting in gaps in systematic oversight.

As part of this reorganization, the Alberta government plans to establish two additional organizations tasked with hospital care and continuing care. Recently, a new entity called Recovery Alberta has taken over the mental health and addictions responsibilities previously held by Alberta Health Services, aiming to provide specialized support in these critical areas.
This move reflects a broader trend within the province to enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of its health care system, addressing longstanding concerns about access and quality of care for Albertans.
