First Look at “Rust”: A Western Drama with a Tragic Backdrop
The much-anticipated trailer for the film “Rust” was unveiled on Wednesday, showcasing Alec Baldwin’s portrayal of the outlaw Harland Rust.
The story unfolds in 1880s Kansas, where we meet Lucas McCalister, played by Patrick Scott McDermott. After the orphaned youth accidentally kills a rancher, he faces execution. In a dramatic turn of events, Lucas’s estranged grandfather, notorious outlaw Harland Rust (portrayed by Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and they embark on a perilous journey toward Mexico. As the fugitives navigate through the harsh wilderness, they must evade a relentless U.S. Marshal named Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a merciless bounty hunter known as ‘Preacher’ (Travis Fimmel).
During a poignant moment around a campfire, Harland reflects, “Some things in this life you can’t get back, I reckon,” hinting at the film’s deeper themes of loss and regret.
The production of “Rust” is marked by sadness, as Baldwin was involved in a tragic incident during filming in October 2021. While handling a firearm on set, a discharge resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuries to director Joel Souza in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
In a legal outcome earlier this year, armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and received an 18-month prison sentence. Baldwin faced charges of involuntary manslaughter, but the case against him was subsequently dropped.
The film made its debut at Poland’s Camerimage Festival in November, where Souza attended alongside Bianca Cline, who stepped in as the cinematographer after Hutchins’ tragic passing.

During the festival, Souza expressed his gratitude to the audience, saying, “We are here in a place that she loved so much, probably second only to being on set… thank you all for coming and for taking a few hours out of your day to celebrate my friend and to celebrate her art and her talent. She really was something.”
As reported by People magazine, “Rust” is set to premiere in theaters and on digital platforms on May 2.
