Alex Jones Challenges Sale of Infowars in Bankruptcy Proceeding

Alex Jones, known for his controversial views and media presence, has filed a lawsuit aiming to contest the recent sale of his Infowars platform. This sale was made to Global Tetrahedron, the parent company of the satirical news outlet The Onion, in conjunction with the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims.

In his filing with the Texas bankruptcy court, Jones claimed that a “conspiratorial negotiation and agreement” involving his bankruptcy trustee resulted in a “flagrantly non-compliant Frankenstein bid,” which ultimately led to the selection of the Sandy Hook families and Global Tetrahedron as the successful bidders.

The auction process occurred after Jones declared both personal and corporate bankruptcy in 2022, facing substantial damages exceeding $1 billion after spreading false information that the Sandy Hook shooting was staged.

According to Jones’s allegations, the auction winning bid was misleadingly inflated in value. He asserts that while his online store associated bid was $3.5 million, the bid from The Onion only had a basic value of $1.75 million. However, it appeared more significant because the Sandy Hook families agreed to waive a portion of their prospective earnings from the sale, allegedly impacting the overall payouts for other claimants against Jones.

Details regarding the actual value of Global Tetrahedron’s bid have not been disclosed publicly.

The Independent has reached out to The Onion’s CEO, Ben Collins, for further comment.

Christopher R. Murray, the bankruptcy trustee responsible for overseeing Jones’s asset sale, characterized Jones’s lawsuit as a misguided attempt by a disheartened bidder to manipulate a fair auction process. He indicated that Jones’s claims lack any substantiation and appear aimed at discrediting legitimate competition.

Legal representatives for the Sandy Hook families reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing justice, emphasizing their dedication to holding Jones accountable. Attorney Chris Mattei stated, “They will not be intimidated” and are eager to expedite the process to a fair resolution.

A status conference has been scheduled for November 25 to further address the situation surrounding the Infowars sale.

After the auction, Collins, the CEO of The Onion, confirmed the winning bid, asserting that the sale process is progressing as expected.

Comments made by a judge overseeing the case last week indicated some unease regarding the auction’s results, highlighting the need for an evidentiary hearing to ensure transparency and proper conduct throughout the bidding process. District Judge Christopher Lopez expressed his intent to ascertain the full details of the auction, demonstrating a commitment to fair legal proceedings.

In his final broadcast before the auction, Jones suggested that powerful adversaries were conspiring to close down his platform, framing the situation within his ongoing narrative of external threats.

The legal matters surrounding Jones extend to social media, where his account on X was reinstated recently. Lawyers for X have indicated they are monitoring the situation regarding the potential impact of the bankruptcy proceedings.
