Ovechkin’s Pursuit of Gretzky: A Historic Start to the Season

As the Washington Capitals progress through their season, Alex Ovechkin is showcasing an impressive scoring prowess that puts him on track to surpass Wayne Gretzky’s legendary goal record by the end of this spring.

In a recent match against the Montreal Canadiens, Ovechkin netted his 858th career goal, bringing him just 37 goals shy of breaking Gretzky’s monumental NHL record. He began the season 42 goals away from this milestone, a feat that once seemed distant.

“He’s been phenomenal,” remarked Aliaksei Protas, one of Ovechkin’s linemates, who contributed a goal with Ovechkin’s assistance in the Capitals’ 6-3 triumph. “His celebrations are infectious; they are reminiscent of a rookie’s excitement. It’s clear he’s motivated by the pursuit of such an incredible record.”

The 39-year-old captain of the Capitals has already scored five goals in this season, demonstrating his remarkable ability to find the back of the net, a rarity for someone of his age in the hockey world.

In a recent video conference, hockey legends Wayne Gretzky and Alex Ovechkin discussed the record, with Gretzky expressing his support for Ovechkin’s ambitions.

“You can see the joy in his eyes, celebrating like a child,” Protas noted. “It’s unique. That’s part of what makes him such an extraordinary player and goal scorer—his relentless hunger to score.”

With his goal against Montreal’s Cayden Primeau, Ovechkin added to his legacy by scoring against his 176th different goaltender. He is on a steady path toward achieving his 19th season with at least 30 goals, a record he already holds with 18 such seasons, more than any other player in NHL history.

After his standout performance against the Canadiens, Ovechkin credited Protas and center Dylan Strome for their crucial roles in his scoring ability.

“You can see some of the open chances I get,” remarked Ovechkin. “[Strome and Protas] consistently set me up, and sometimes I almost miss the opportunities as they find me out there.”

The Capitals are enjoying one of their best starts in nearly a decade, securing victories in seven of their first nine games, an accomplishment not seen since the 2015-16 season.

“Right now, we are having fun,” Ovechkin shared. “There’s a great sense of support among us. Winning games fosters an encouraging atmosphere from both the coaches and players. I hope this momentum continues, but we understand the season is a long journey filled with ups and downs; we need to stay united regardless of the circumstances.”
