The 48-year-old will reprise Cher Horowitz in the upcoming show.
The original Clueless film came out in 1995.
Alicia Silverstone is set to return as Cher Horowitz in an exciting new television adaptation of Clueless. Having brought the beloved character to life in the 1995 comedy classic, the 48-year-old actress will return to the role in a series that promises to capture the charm of the original. This new project is developed by notable creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, known for their work on Gossip Girl, with the film’s director, Amy Heckerling, joining as an executive producer.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the series will be produced by CBS Studios, which holds the rights to the original film, in collaboration with Universal Television. It’s important to highlight that this new adaptation is distinct from a previous version that was planned for Peacock in 2020, which was envisioned as a mystery narrative centered on Cher’s mysterious disappearance and her best friend Dionne’s quest to find her.
Previously, the Clueless franchise expanded into a sitcom that aired for three seasons from 1996 to 1999, where Rachel Blanchard took over the role of Cher, allowing original cast members such as Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, and Elisa Donovan to reprise their roles. Heckerling also contributed to that series. While details about the cast of the upcoming show remain sparse, Silverstone’s sentiments regarding a potential sequel resonate with the enduring fondness for the film. She remarked on this nostalgic connection, stating, “Has it been 30 years yet? That always is a fun conversation. It’s so lovely to see how people still love that movie. It’s very nice,” as reported by The Guardian.
Inspired loosely by Jane Austen’s novel Emma, Clueless portrays the experiences of a privileged teen in Los Angeles as she navigates the complexities of high school life and dabbling in matchmaking. The film’s combination of humor and heart led to its unexpected success at the box office and its further reach through the home video market.
This isn’t the first revival of Silverstone’s role; she previously returned as Cher for a Super Bowl advertisement in 2023, which reinvigorated interest in her career. Recently, she has appeared in series such as American Horror Stories, The Baby-Sitters Club, and American Woman. Looking ahead, she is also set to star in Yorgos Lanthimos’s film Bugonia and the Acorn TV series Irish Blood.
