An Emmy contender has made a strategic choice that may significantly affect this year’s nominations and outcomes. According to exclusive information from Gold Derby, Allison Janney plans to enter the race as Best Drama Supporting Actress for her role in the second season of The Diplomat. With seven Primetime Emmy wins to her name, an eighth victory would place her alongside television icons Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who both hold the record.
Joining the Netflix series for its latest season, which premiered on October 31, 2024, Janney’s role as U.S. Vice President Grace Penn spans only two episodes. This limited screen time offered her the option to submit her performance as either a guest or supporting actress.
Several factors may have influenced her choice, particularly the supportive recognitions she has received from the 2025 Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, along with a nomination at the SAG Awards in a competitive field that merged lead and supporting performances.
The race for Best Drama Supporting Actress is expected to be intense when nominees are revealed in July. Presently, Gold Derby ranks Janney in the third position, trailing The White Lotus stars Carrie Coon and Parker Posey. Other top contenders include Kaitlyn Dever and Isabela Merced from The Last of Us, Aimee Lou Wood and Natasha Rothwell from The White Lotus, Patricia Arquette from Severance, Taylor Dearden from The Pitt, and Kristin Scott Thomas from Slow Horses.
