Fernando Alonso Aims for Brazilian Grand Prix Amid Health Concerns
Fernando Alonso is set to arrive later than anticipated at the Brazilian Grand Prix, having made a trip back to Europe for medical treatment following an intestinal infection that he contracted after the recent Mexico City Grand Prix.
The experienced driver had been feeling unwell leading up to last weekend’s race and missed the media day. However, he managed to recover sufficiently to participate throughout the event, marking his milestone 400th Formula 1 weekend.
Despite his participation, Aston Martin revealed that the infection necessitated his return to Europe for specialized care. Thankfully, his treatment seems to have been effective, and Alonso is expected to travel to Brazil to take part in the opening practice session on Friday. Unfortunately, he will miss the media engagements on Thursday.
An official statement from Aston Martin noted, “The extra day of treatment has delayed his travel plans to Brazil but ensures he will be ready for this weekend’s racing.”
Throughout the Mexico race, Alonso acknowledged that he was not at his best, describing his condition as below 100%. He shared, “I’ve been not 100% physically last few days,” before retiring from the race. He noted, however, that the circuit’s characteristics were somewhat forgiving in terms of physical demands.
Implications for the Brazilian Grand Prix
The upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix will feature a sprint format, which means Alonso will be eager to optimize his performance and take advantage of any extra points available. Nonetheless, if further health issues arise, Aston Martin could potentially replace him with reserve driver Felipe Drugovich, who is poised to compete in his home race this weekend.
Discussing his plans ahead of the event, Drugovich expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I’ll be doing a lot of interviews with local media, keeping across all the sessions when Lance and Fernando are out on track, and supporting the team with feedback.” He indicated his excitement about the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, highlighting the warm reception he receives from fans and media alike, which he deeply appreciates.
