Amanda Seyfried Reflects on Turning Down Role in “Guardians of the Galaxy”
Amanda Seyfried recently shared insights into her decision to decline the role of Gamora in Marvel’s blockbuster film “Guardians of the Galaxy.” During her appearance on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Seyfried disclosed that she feared the film might turn out to be Marvel’s first major failure.
“I was wrong,” she admitted, acknowledging the film’s overwhelming success.
Her decision was not made lightly. Seyfried had met with director James Gunn and described the experience as “wonderful,” asserting that the meeting certainly took place despite any claims to the contrary. “I definitely got the offer for it, and I definitely mulled over it for a couple of days,” she explained.
The actress revealed her concerns stemmed from a combination of factors. At that time, she was training with individuals who had previously worked with actors in the “X-Men” franchise, leading to her fears of being typecast as an actor painted a different color. Additionally, she did not wish to commit to living in London for six months per year, as the filming schedule would require. Instead, she wanted to pursue a role in Seth MacFarlane’s “A Million Ways to Die in the West.”
Seyfried emphasized the potential career implications of being involved in a Marvel film that failed to resonate with audiences: “I thought that because this was about a talking tree and a talking raccoon, that it was going to be Marvel’s first bomb and that Chris Pratt and I would never work again. I was wrong,” she reiterated.
Despite her initial fears, she now considers Gunn a remarkable talent, noting, “He’s a genius” and a filmmaker capable of making anything work. However, she felt apprehensive at that stage in her career, expressing concern about the physical demands of the role and the extensive commitment involved: “I was at a precarious moment in my career, and I didn’t want to suffer for the work.”
Ultimately, she reflected positively on her choices, stating, “I don’t regret any decision that I made. I did it for myself in the moment, and it was right for me then, and it’s good for me now.” She expressed happiness for her peers in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” stating that they are thriving in their roles and that she appreciates having trusted her instincts.
