Amazon Cancels “Citadel” Spinoffs, Focuses on Main Series

The “Citadel” universe is undergoing significant changes as Amazon MGM Studios confirms the cancellation of its spinoffs, “Honey Bunny” and “Diana,” after just one season. These series, set in India and Italy respectively, will instead be incorporated into the main series’ forthcoming second season, which is slated for release in the second quarter of 2026.

Season 2 of “Citadel” is poised to pick up one month following the conclusion of Season 1, as the main characters navigate perilous circumstances while evading Manticore agents globally. The protagonists are compelled to emerge from the shadows to collaborate with an unconventional team of spies in response to a looming threat posed by Manticore’s billionaire, Paulo Braga, who is preparing to deploy a devastating piece of technology created by one of Citadel’s own characters, Bernard Orlick.

Veron Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed optimism about the upcoming season despite the spinoffs not continuing as standalone series. “While these successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series, Season 2 of Citadel will be our most exhilarating yet,” Sanders stated. He emphasized the promise of high-stakes narratives, the addition of fresh cast members, and a bold cinematic vision that aims to deepen the emotional arcs of key characters such as Nadia, Mason, and Orlick, all while contending with the relentless threat posed by Manticore.

The creation of the “Citadel” franchise was a significant initiative led by Jen Salke, the former head of Amazon MGM Studios, who was recently removed from her position after eight years. Following her departure, Amazon announced that Salke would move into a producing role, while Veron Sanders and Courtenay Valenti, who oversees theatrical and streaming film, will now report directly to Mike Hopkins.

“Citadel” was initially renewed for a second season in May 2023, with Joe Russo returning to direct, and David Weil continuing as showrunner to guide the series going forward.
