Amazon Introduces ‘Haul’: A New Budget Shopping Experience
In a strategic move ahead of the busy holiday shopping season, Amazon has launched a new section on its mobile app known as Haul. This exclusive mobile platform focuses on offering ultra-low-priced items, primarily sourced directly from China.
Haul aims to compete with the rising popularity of applications like Temu, owned by PDD Holdings, and fast-fashion giant Shein. According to Amazon, the newly introduced section has already attracted millions of unique customer visits since its debut in November.
Much like Temu, Haul features budget-friendly deals, showcasing products such as sneakers priced at $9.98, kitchenware for $5.99, and phone accessories starting as low as $2.99. However, Haul distinguishes itself by implementing a price cap of $20 on items, alongside free shipping for orders exceeding $25. This model incentivizes consumers to purchase multiple items, aligning with the concept of a ‘haul.’
Neil Saunders, managing director at GlobalData Retail, commented on Amazon’s strategy, highlighting the separation of Haul from the main Amazon site. “This approach indicates their reluctance to have consumers shift towards lower-priced goods on their primary platform,” he stated.
While Haul provides cheaper prices, customers will experience longer shipping times. Unlike Prime members who often enjoy rapid delivery within one or two days, products ordered through Haul may take one to two weeks to arrive. Historically, Amazon has collaborated with Chinese sellers as a middleman, maintaining a stock at U.S. warehouses to enhance shipping speed, a cost that is typically reflected in product prices.
Both Haul and Temu maintain affordable prices by leveraging a network of China-based suppliers. These sellers benefit from the de minimis provision that allows shipments valued at under $800 to enter the United States without incurring duties or taxes. However, this customs exemption is under scrutiny at the federal level.
The trade-offs between lower prices and longer shipping times seem to resonate with American consumers. The explosive rise of Temu since its U.S. launch in September 2022, where it quickly became the most downloaded free app on Apple’s app store, exemplifies this trend.
While Haul’s introduction is partly driven by competition with Temu, it also represents a broader recognition of the expanding lower-price market segment that has gained traction in recent years.
Other platforms offering inexpensive Chinese goods, including Alibaba and TikTok Shop, have also witnessed significant growth despite concerns over potential bans and market regulation.
The rapid expansion of these discount retailers has not been without controversy. Companies like Shein have faced criticism regarding their environmental impact and labor practices. A recent report from the House of Representatives indicated connections between Temu and suppliers in China’s Xinjiang region, where allegations of forced labor have been raised. In response, Temu asserted its commitment to ethical business practices and compliance with labor, safety, and environmental standards.
Amazon is concurrently facing federal scrutiny regarding workplace safety, with investigations into high injury rates in its warehouses. Despite this, the company remains a colossal player in the retail space, with sales figures continuing to set records.
As Saunders pointed out, “Consumers often claim to oppose the ramifications of inexpensive goods, yet their shopping behaviors tell a different story, as they continue to purchase these products in large numbers.”
Currently in its beta phase, Haul is experiencing demand that reportedly exceeds supply, leading to sold-out items during its initial Black Friday sale. Amazon has announced plans to expand Haul’s inventory significantly, aiming to offer hundreds of thousands of items across various categories in the weeks ahead.
The future trajectory of Amazon Haul remains to be seen. Will political challenges impact growth in the budget e-commerce sector? Further analysis is warranted as this story unfolds.
