Amazon Developing Live-Action *Pacific Rim* Series

A live-action series based on *Pacific Rim* is currently in the works at Amazon, as reported by Variety. The announcement regarding this new project first came to light in 2024, highlighting that Eric Heisserer, known for his work on the film *Arrival*, is set to lead its development and writing.

This upcoming series is expected to serve as a prequel to Guillermo Del Toro’s original 2013 film, which centered around the epic battles between colossal Kaiju and the giant mechs known as Jaegers, operated by human pilots. The effort is being backed by Legendary Entertainment, the studio behind the original film, alongside Amazon MGM. This approach resembles the strategy utilized in the “MonsterVerse” franchise, which effectively integrated interconnected stories across films. The series *Monarch: Legacy of Monsters*, released on Apple TV+ in 2023, functioned as both a prequel and a sequel to the previous *MonsterVerse* films.

Heisserer brings a wealth of experience in transforming existing narratives into engaging content. His screenplay for *Arrival* adeptly adapted a complex second-person short story into a mainstream success, while his work on Netflix’s *Shadow and Bone* skillfully wove together elements from the first book and characters from a subsequent duology. In contrast, the *Pacific Rim* narrative appears more direct and action-oriented, focusing on the high-stakes battles that define the franchise.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation from Amazon regarding the release date or other details about the series. However, the *Pacific Rim* franchise has seen a resurgence of content since the release of the original film, including the live-action sequel *Pacific Rim Uprising* in 2018 and the animated series *Pacific Rim: The Black*, which debuted on Netflix in 2021.
