Amazon’s Advancements in Quantum Computing: A Look at the Ocelot Project

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has made notable strides in the realm of quantum computing, particularly with its Ocelot project, which showcases the company’s commitment to innovating within this cutting-edge field. One of the standout aspects of Ocelot is its efficient implementation of a C-NOT gate, a crucial operation in the process of error correction. Research by Amazon has revealed that this operation does not significantly increase the incidence of bit-flip errors. As a result, following each round of error correction, the quantum computer continues to predominantly encounter phase-flip errors, allowing for the continued use of a straightforward and hardware-efficient error correction code.

The journey to develop the Ocelot project began as early as 2021, as noted by key team member Painter. Crafting this quantum device has presented challenges across the entire spectrum of design and function. A significant hurdle was the necessity to develop high-quality qubits capable of executing error correction effectively. Central to this was the ability to grow tantalum, the material used in cat qubits, onto silicon chips with minimal atomic defects.

Puri, another researcher involved in the project, highlights the importance of AWS’s capability to fabricate and control multiple cat qubits within a single device. This advancement represents a significant step forward in scaling quantum computing technologies. However, experts caution that the journey is just beginning. Predictions suggest that achieving any practical applications of quantum computing will require thousands, if not millions, of qubits. Puri describes Amazon’s progress as “a first step” towards more ambitious goals.

As the number of qubits increases, the team recognizes the need to minimize the bit-flip error rate further, which remains a critical area for development. Despite these challenges, the announcement of Ocelot is an encouraging signal of Amazon’s future direction. Painter emphasizes a strategic pivot, noting that while AWS had previously concentrated on conventional transmon qubits, the success of the cat qubit project has shifted their focus. “We really became convinced that this needed to be our mainline engineering effort, and while we will continue to explore other avenues, this is where we are headed,” he asserts. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that the French startup Alice & Bob is also pursuing a quantum computer utilizing cat qubits, underscoring the growing interest in this technology.

Currently, Ocelot is primarily a demonstration of quantum memory capabilities, but the researchers are eager to advance to the next phase. This will involve enhancing the chip by adding more qubits, encoding larger quantities of information, and performing actual computational tasks. However, this path is fraught with challenges, including the complexities of wiring and interlinking multiple chips. Painter notes, “Scaling is not trivial,” emphasizing the intricate nature of this technological evolution.
