Amazon Launches New Group for Agentic AI Development
(Reuters) – In a strategic move, Amazon.com has established a dedicated group focused on agentic artificial intelligence, aimed at enhancing automation for its users and customers. This initiative was disclosed in an internal email reported by Reuters on Tuesday.
The new segment will be spearheaded by Swami Sivasubramanian, a high-ranking executive from Amazon Web Services (AWS). According to an email sent by AWS CEO Matt Garman, this venture represents a significant opportunity for AWS, potentially evolving into a multi-billion dollar business. Sivasubramanian, who previously held the position of vice president in AI and data, is set to report directly to Garman.
Agentic AI is designed to take on various tasks autonomously, allowing users to benefit from automation without needing to issue commands actively. Amazon highlighted these capabilities during the announcement of an upcoming update to its voice service, Alexa, which is expected to roll out to selected customers later this month.
“We have the opportunity to help our customers innovate even faster and unlock more possibilities, and I firmly believe that AI agents are core to this next wave of innovation,” Garman remarked in his email.
An Amazon spokesperson has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the new initiative.
On the same day, Peter DeSantis, senior vice president at AWS, outlined further organizational changes within the division, which has consistently generated profits for Amazon. The restructuring includes repositioning the AI groups Bedrock and SageMaker, along with hardware engineering, to be part of the compute organization. Additionally, a new collective group will focus on enhancing customer experience and commerce.
DeSantis noted that these adjustments are intended to “accelerate innovation.”
Meanwhile, shares for Amazon, headquartered in Seattle, experienced a minor decline of less than 1%, trading at $204.81.
