Mahershala Ali Gears Up for Action in New Film Amid MCU’s Blade Delays
As the release of the much-anticipated MCU reboot of Blade remains uncertain, Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali is poised to make waves in a different project. He is set to star in Amazon’s upcoming action movie, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. This film is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Orion Pictures and will see Ali collaborate with director and writer Bassam Tariq, who was previously considered to direct the Blade reboot.
According to a report from Deadline, the cast of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother has expanded to include notable actors such as John Cho (Searching, Star Trek), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul, The Boys), Abubakr Ali (Anything’s Possible), Tramell Tillman (Severance), Tiffany Boone (Mufasa: The Lion King), Laith Nakli (Problemista), Adia (Full Circle), and Jahleel Kamara (Nanny), all joining Ali in the action-packed thriller.
While specifics about the film’s storyline remain undisclosed, early reports have suggested that it will center on Ali’s character, an assassin grappling with an existential crisis and feelings of isolation while maneuvering through the challenges of his violent career. Tariq, known for his critically acclaimed work in Mogul Mowgli, will helm the project, which promises to explore deep themes alongside its action elements.
Current Status of the MCU Blade Reboot
The journey of the MCU Blade reboot has been tumultuous, marked by a series of setbacks including the loss of directors and writers, alongside growing frustrations from lead actor Mahershala Ali. Initially announced in 2019, fans have faced a prolonged wait, compounded by the fact that Wesley Snipes, the original Daywalker, reprised his role earlier this year in Deadpool & Wolverine before Ali could make his debut.
Despite various promising updates throughout the years, the Blade reboot recently saw its removal from the Marvel Studios release calendar. While Ali’s participation in Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother represents a noteworthy opportunity for the actor to showcase his capabilities in an action film, it begs the question of whether this project could potentially divert him from Blade. The future remains uncertain.
Although Ali has yet to feature prominently as Blade in the MCU, he made a brief appearance through voice work in the film Eternals and is set to voice the character again in the upcoming Disney+ animated series, Marvel Zombies. In this series, he will portray a version of Blade, equipped with powers akin to Moon Knight, as he engages in battle against hordes of the undead. The notion of seeing this alternate portrayal before the character’s main cinematic version is a reflection on the disarray surrounding the Blade project. Marvel Zombies is scheduled to debut on Disney+ in October 2025.
In the meantime, Ali is also set to appear in the upcoming film Jurassic World Rebirth, which Universal Pictures plans to release in the United States on July 2, 2025.
