Amber Ruffin Addresses Seth Meyers’ Impact on Trump’s Political Rise
Amber Ruffin defended her boss, Seth Meyers, in a recent appearance on CNN concerning Meyers’ 2011 roast of Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an event many believe to have catalyzed Trump’s political ambitions.
As announced Tuesday, Ruffin will take on the role of emcee for the 2025 dinner, and during her segment, CNN’s Jake Tapper questioned her about her thoughts on Meyers’ contribution to what he termed “the Trump origin story.” While Trump notably avoided the event during his presidency, Tapper inquired whether she felt any hesitation regarding choosing her targets in light of Meyers’ past involvement.
With humor, Ruffin expressed, “I am a writer on ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers.’ Seth Meyers is a friend of mine. He got us into this mess. It’s his fault. When you’re looking for someone to blame, blame my boss.” Through her lighthearted jab at Meyers, she acknowledged the unpredictable nature of politics and the implications of late-night comedy.
Ruffin elaborated that Meyers was simply performing his duties as a comedian. “No, he did what he had to do,” she asserted. “You can’t, it cannot be your job to razz people and then this man comes along and is like, ‘I’m going to be president.’ You have to laugh! Ultimately, joke’s on us, isn’t it?”
During the 2011 dinner, Meyers notably made jabs at Trump, who was present that evening. Tapper recalled how both Meyers and then-President Barack Obama “mocked him viciously,” leading some observers to suggest that the comedy may have indirectly pushed Trump toward a presidential run.
