AMD Launches 5th Generation Epyc Embedded Processors for Networking, Storage, and Industrial Edge Applications

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has unveiled its latest addition to the x86 embedded processor lineup with the launch of the 5th Generation AMD Epyc Embedded processors.

The AMD Epyc Embedded 9005 Series CPUs are tailored for the embedded market, optimizing computational power alongside specialized features that enhance durability, resilience, and the development process of embedded applications.

Leveraging the established Zen 5 architecture, these processors are engineered to provide superior performance and energy efficiency, enabling networking, storage, and industrial edge systems to manage larger data volumes more quickly and effectively.

“The surge in AI-driven network traffic, the escalating demands for data storage, and the growth of industrial edge computing are all contributing to the increased need for high-performance embedded platforms,” remarked Salil Raje, AMD’s senior vice president of adaptive and embedded computing. He noted that the 5th Gen AMD Epyc Embedded processors deliver exceptional performance and efficiency while ensuring the long product lifecycles and robust system resilience that clients depend on for reliable operation in critical “always-on” scenarios.

With core counts ranging from 8 to 192 in a single socket, the AMD Epyc Embedded 9005 Series is designed for high-demand embedded systems. This innovative core density translates to significant improvements in data processing capability, achieving enhancements of up to 1.3 times for networking tasks and 1.6 times for storage workloads, rendering these processors ideal for applications such as network security platforms, advanced storage systems, and industrial control processes.

Incorporating the advanced Zen 5c core architecture results in superior throughput alongside greater energy efficiency, providing an estimated 1.3 times increase in socket throughput and up to 1.3 times better performance per watt compared to competitors.

These processors support an impressive capacity of up to 6TB of DDR5 memory per socket, along with extended I/O capabilities that include up to 160 PCIe Gen5 lanes with CXL 2.0. This high degree of connectivity facilitates expansive storage options and efficient data transfers in networking and storage scenarios.

Tailored for Specific Applications

The AMD Epyc Embedded 9005 Series is equipped with various advanced embedded features designed to deliver a reliable, secure, and sustainable platform.

To address the extended lifecycle and operational demands of the embedded sector, these processors come with a seven-year manufacturing support commitment, aiding system designers in guaranteeing long-term product availability and reducing the need for redesigns and new qualification processes.

Collaboration and Market Availability

AMD is partnering with key ecosystem players, including notable ODMs and OEMs such as Cisco and IBM, to ensure the effective integration of these next-generation embedded processors into the market.

“The decision to utilize the AMD Epyc Embedded 9005 Series processor in one of our top-tier firewall offerings stems from its exceptional compute performance, scalability—reaching up to 192 cores—and high memory and I/O bandwidth,” stated Lukasz Bromirski, director of product management at Cisco. “AMD provides reliable performance while also delivering quality support and maintaining a consistent product roadmap.”

Matthew Geiser, who oversees product management for IBM Storage for Data, AI, and HPC, commented, “The IBM Storage Scale System 6000 is engineered for high-speed, high-performance, and reliable operation suitable for demanding enterprise AI workloads. A significant advantage of the AMD Epyc Embedded 9005 processors is their incorporation of redundant paths, enhancing data availability and connectivity options, making them a great match for performance-intensive applications on the IBM Storage Scale System.”

The AMD Epyc Embedded 9005 Series processors are currently in the sampling phase with early access customers, with full production expected to commence in the second quarter of 2025. These processors are designed to fit the SP5 socket, which aligns with the previous generation AMD Epyc Embedded 9004 Series, thereby providing an uncomplicated upgrade solution for existing customers.
