American Library Association Launches Public Supporter Program

The American Library Association (ALA) has introduced a new initiative via its I Love Libraries platform, aimed at boosting donations and keeping library patrons informed about the organization’s advocacy and grant-related efforts. According to ALA president Cindy Hohl, the website has already cultivated a dedicated following among library users. “This new program allows everyone to make a donation and become our supporters,” she elaborated.

Libraries are facing significant challenges due to ongoing censorship conflicts and reductions in funding, which have led to potential staff layoffs. A recent instance illustrating these issues was the temporary closure of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library on February 18, a direct result of budget cuts initiated during the Trump administration that also triggered extensive layoffs across various federal agencies. In response, ALA has emphasized that the public supporter program aims to rally public involvement in advocating for library funding, intellectual freedom, and digital equity, providing assistance to small and rural libraries and promoting universal broadband access.

Hohl, who serves as the director of policy analysis and operational support for the Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library, stated that fostering public support for ALA has been a primary focus during her tenure as president throughout 2024–2025. “Our goal is to enhance awareness of ALA through various membership and sponsorship opportunities,” she remarked, expressing enthusiasm over the early interest shown in the program.

The initiative includes outreach to potential donors as a strategy for relationship marketing and enhancing community engagement. Notable authors, such as comics creators Scott McCloud and Raina Telgemeier, who recently spoke at LibLearnX, have recorded supportive messages for ALA. Additionally, celebrities like Ethan Hawke and his daughter Maya Hawke have expressed their support through the ALA’s How I Library podcast.

Supporters who become monthly donors will receive a “For Our Libraries” tote bag, invitations to virtual author events, and a monthly subscription to ALA’s publication, Booklist Reader. One-time donors contributing $100 or more will also receive the tote bag, though they will not have access to the additional features. Hohl emphasized that the author events are a new aspect of the program intended to offer greater value and facilitate connections between readers and authors, including those who are newly published.

“In our engagement efforts, we want to make it clear that libraries are essential for providing equal access to information and services,” Hohl asserted. “Public and school libraries are dedicated to meeting the informational needs of their communities.”
