Director Shoojit Sircar Reflects on Working with Amitabh Bachchan, Irrfan, and Deepika Padukone in Piku
Piku, headlined by Deepika Padukone, garnered significant attention upon its release, emerging as a pivotal film in contemporary Indian cinema. In a recent interview on Unfiltered with Samdish, director Shoojit Sircar discussed the unique dynamics of filming with the star-studded cast, which included Amitabh Bachchan and the late Irrfan Khan.
Sircar described Irrfan’s acting style as akin to whiskey, suggesting that he grew richer and deeper with each performance. He explained that Amitabh Bachchan relies on thorough rehearsals to prepare, stating that the iconic actor prefers to have everything in place before beginning to roll, often achieving excellence in a single take.
The director revealed a telling moment from the set involving Irrfan, who humorously likened his first take to the initial sip of tea, indicating his gradual approach to getting into character. Sircar recounted an instance where Irrfan inquired about Bachchan’s demeanor on set, only to perceive a nervous energy from the veteran actor, showcasing the respect and awe that exists among peers in the industry.
Shoojit further revealed that Irrfan wished to have all of Amitabh’s scenes filmed before he made his entrance on set. He noted that such apprehension was understandable, as performing alongside a legend like Bachchan could unsettle anyone. Interestingly, the actors had not rehearsed together prior to shooting, making their first interactions on the set, which excited both parties.
The director also addressed the casting decision of pairing Deepika with Irrfan. He emphasized the contrast between their personas, with Irrfan not traditionally being a mainstream actor while Deepika enjoys a position as a leading star. Sircar shared that Deepika had expressed concern over acting alongside such a formidable talent, reflecting the esteem in which Irrfan was held.
Piku, under the skilled direction of Shoojit Sircar, was produced by NP Singh, Ronnie Lahiri, and Sneha Rajani. The film also featured notable performances from Moushumi Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, and Raghubir Yadav, contributing to its overall acclaim.
