Amorim to Lean on Youth in Upcoming Premier League Matches

Manager Ruben Amorim is set to prioritize the Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao by incorporating younger players into Manchester United’s starting lineup for their next three Premier League games. The matchup with Athletic is slated for May 1, followed by the second leg a week later, with fixtures against Wolves and Bournemouth scheduled before the first leg, and a trip to Brentford in between the European contests.

Manchester United recently secured a thrilling 5-4 victory in extra time over Lyon, advancing 7-6 on aggregate and keeping their hopes alive for both a trophy and Champions League qualification. As a result, at least three young talents—Harry Amass, Chido Obi, and Ayden Heaven—are expected to see increased playing time in the coming matches.

Amass, an 18-year-old defender, made his European debut by coming on in the 100th minute against Lyon after already featuring twice in the Premier League. Meanwhile, 17-year-old forward Obi has appeared in three league matches and one in the FA Cup, and Heaven, who is also 18, has logged time in two league games, plus one in the FA Cup and the Europa League.

In an effort to manage his squad effectively, Amorim has also included five more academy players on the bench recently: Jaydan Kamason, Godwill Kukonki, Jack Moorhouse, Sekou Koné, and Toby Collyer, who is currently sidelined due to injury.

“This might not be the ideal time for young players to make their mark, as they require a firm foundation to truly showcase their abilities; however, we must adapt to our circumstances,” Amorim stated. He mentioned that while it’s a challenging moment, surprises can happen, referencing how Ayden has stepped up to the plate amidst injuries within the squad. “When he’s ready, he can certainly contribute. You never know how these situations can unfold,” he added.

Amorim also highlighted the performances of Amass and Obi, saying, “Amass performed exceptionally against Lyon, and Chido has shown capabilities during his appearances. It’s a tough period for the kids, but if they need to play, we will give them that opportunity.”

When probed about the risk involved in his selections, Amorim expressed the necessity of careful consideration of player fitness, especially with players like Diogo Dalot being fatigued and several others recently returning from injury, including Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, and Luke Shaw.

The head coach also spoke about Wolverhampton Wanderers, giving special mention to Matheus Cunha, who has netted 16 goals this season. However, he refrained from confirming any potential transfer interest, stating, “I mentioned Matheus purely as an example since he’s been scoring a lot.”

In light of recent events, Noussair Mazraoui had to be substituted at half-time against Lyon due to personal matters, while defender Victor Lindelöf also left the match early. Amorim provided updates on both players, assuring that Lindelöf is fit to face Wolves and that Mazraoui is likely to be available as well. “Everything is fine now,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing individual circumstances alongside team commitments.

Amorim reached out to the fans ahead of the Wolves match, acknowledging the difficult season but urging supporters to rally behind the team. “I understand this season has been tough for everyone, but we really need their encouragement on Sunday,” he said.
